Latest news

Update [January 11, 2019]: Huawei has opened invitations for users of the Huawei Y9 2019 to join the EMUI 9.0 beta program based on Android 9 Pie. This program is thus far limited to the Chinese market, but we expect it to expand to other markets in the coming weeks. Also, note that the download won’t be available until later this month, but if you are interested in trialing Pie on your Y9 2019, now is the time to submit your interest.

Huawei’s budget Y series is quite popular and it grew even bigger in 2018 with the addition of the Huawei Y9 2018. This device also goes by the name Huawei Enjoy 8 Plus in China and has received a successor in the shape of Huawei Y9 2019.

On this page, we bring you all the latest news about the Huawei Y9 2018 and Y9 2019 software updates, both minor and major, alongside their changelogs and release dates. This page will also (occasionally) cover unofficial software updates for the Y9 series and to ensure only the latest info is available, we’ll keep on updating the post whenever new software updates show up.

Huawei Y9 2019

Having been launched towards the end of 2018, Huawei Y9 2019 has yet to receive any significant software update. However, we will update this section with these details when the updates start trickling in. The biggest development, though, is that Huawei Y9 2019 users are now being invited to join EMUI 9.0 beta testing program that brings early access to Android 9 Pie.

Huawei Y9 Android 9 Pie update

  • Both 2018 and 2019 models should receive an update to Android 9 Pie
  • The update is expected in Q2 or Q3 2019

Huawei Y9 2018 is the first of its kind and it comes preinstalled with Android 8.0 Oreo – and so does its successor, the Y9 2019. This means that in addition to coming with Google’s Project Treble support, the duo is also likely to receive an update to Android 9 Pie quite early.

Usually, devices in the same price category as the Y9 2018 and Y9 2019 get one major OS upgrade, meaning the only OS upgrade should bring Pie on board.

It remains to be seen how Project Treble will aid Huawei Y9 duo, but given how effective this initiative turns out heavily depends on the smartphone vendor’s willingness to roll out swift updates coupled with the fact that the Y9 2018 is a budget device could see us wait until Q2 or maybe Q3 2019 for Android 9 Pie update to arrive. However, those using the Y9 2019 can expect an earlier release especially now that the Huawei is already sending invitations for users to come and try EMUI 9.0 based on Pie in China.
