Huawei P20 to feature vertical tri-camera setup

Leaked Huawei P20 Case

This is the month of new phones and it’s normal that fans are eagerly waiting to see what their beloved OEMs have for them this time around. One such fan base is Huawei’s, which is steadily growing globally thanks to some impressive phones by the Chinese tech giant.

Even before we get enough of the magnificent Huawei Mate 10 Pro, there’s a new Huawei P20 in the pipeline, a successor to the P10 released last year. Just today, we learned that the P20 will ship with Android 8.1 Oreo based on EMUI 8.1 out of the box. Also, we have come to learn that the P20, which is codenamed Emily, will be sold in at least two color variants of Ceramic Black and Twilight.

Prior to this, we had heard reports that Huawei is doubling down its photography efforts, where the P20 and P20 Plus will be the first to rock a three-lens camera setup on the back. The company has been among the strong proponents of dual-lens cameras and now it wants to take this technology to the next level.

According to leaked images of an alleged Huawei P20 case, the phone will ship with three lenses on the back. Apparently, the lenses will be arranged vertically and in the same position as the iPhone X, which has two lenses. The cutout is big enough to house three lenses, but whether the story will be the same for the P20 Lite remains to be seen. As for the LED flash, it should appear just below the camera lenses.

The Huawei Mate 10 Pro doesn’t come with a 3.5mm audio jack, but the standard Mate 10 does. From the images, it appears that the Huawei P20 will go the former’s way and adopt the universal USB Type-C port for audio, data transfer and charging. There are speaker grilles on either side of the USB-C port, which further suggests that the P20 may ship with dual bottom-facing speakers.

At the top of the case, just above the 3-lens camera cutout, is what appears like a 3.5mm audio jack cutout. Well, it isn’t, rather, this should be where the microphone will be placed.

Although this latest development corroborates previous reports on the cameras of the Huawei P20, it doesn’t shed any light on the exact specs of the cameras. But looking at the recent past, we are adamant that the cameras will still be Leica-branded.

Other reports have suggested that the P20 and P20 Plus will come with a Kirin 970 SoC, 6/8GB RAM, 64/128GB storage and will be priced at about 4,000 yuan, which translates to around $635.

We’ll be waiting to see if this materializes towards the end of March, but until then, take this with a grain of salt.
