Update [January 12, 2019]: In what is a surprise, the Huawei P Smart has made a stop on Geekbench running Android 9 Pie. Now, this isn’t to say the device will receive the update soon, but if the benchmark is to be believed, the P Smart is possibly testing the OS. This means the stable version may be out within 6-8 weeks, which leaves us at late Q1 or early Q2 2019.
Just so you know, a variant of the Huawei P Smart+, the Huawei Nova 3i, is already invited to join Android 9 Pie beta testing program, with an expected release date of about the same time as the P Smart.
Update [January 11, 2019]: Huawei P Smart has a new update that brings along EMUI 220.127.116.11 OTA to the handset. The update has been spotted in China, but it should also hit global units soon.
In addition to installing new Android security patches for the month of December 2018, the update also adds a safety feature allowing the user to press the power button five times in a row to activate Emergency SOS, fixes the issue where Find My Phone would occasionally fail at night, prompts users when a recording has been finished successfully, where touching the prompt takes you to the recording, and improves the launch speed of certain mainstream apps.
While we expect Huawei P Smart to join its P Smart+ counterpart in receiving an update to Android 9 Pie, the wait could go all the way to Q2 or even Q3 2019. In short, your guess is as good as ours.

Huawei P Smart was unveiled towards the end of 2017 in China, where it goes by the name Huawei Enjoy 7S. It took the company up to August 2018 to bring the Huawei P Smart+, a superior variant of the late 2017 release. This device sells in India as Huawei Nova 3i.
These devices, like other midrange phones from Huawei, are bound to receive regular software updates from the company to keep them performing to the best levels and on this page, we keep track of these updates, be it the smaller, monthly improvements or the major Android OS upgrades.

Android 9 Pie update
- Both Huawei P Smart and P Smart+ are eligible for Pie update
- Android 9 update expected in Q2 2019
At launch, the Huawei P Smart and P Smart+ came preinstalled with Android Oreo out of the box (8.0 on the former and 8.1 on the latter). Given that the devices are entitled to at least one major OS upgrade, the update to Android 9 Pie will be their first.
What remains unclear, though, is when Huawei plans to begin rolling out the OTA updates, but given the devices have Project Treble out of the box, we are hopeful that the stable Pie rollout will begin somewhere in Q2 2019 or maybe early in the following quarter.
We’ll update this post with fresh info on when Huawei P Smart and Huawei P Smart+ will begin receiving new updates.
