How to fix the Galaxy S8 Camera app crashing issue after installing the Oreo update

Samsung Galaxy S8 Smartphone

With the release of Galaxy S9, Samsung not only corrected its poorly placed position of the fingerprint sensor, but also brought along one of the best cameras ever on a smartphone. But the camera on the Galaxy S8 continues to be a stunner, even if it wasn’t much of an upgrade from its predecessor.

With the latest Oreo flavored update that came last month, Samsung also updated the Samsung Experience UX to version 9.0. However, the latest update seems to be causing the Camera app of the Galaxy S8 to malfunction and brings up the message “Camera keeps stopping” every time.

Galaxy S8 Camera app crashing after Oreo update? How to fix this

Method 1: Reset the Camera app

It is quite possible that the new Android 8.0 Oreo update along with the update for the Camera app could have caused some files to become corrupt. Simply hitting the reset button on the Camera app of your Galaxy S8 can help you resolve this issue.

  1. From the home screen of your Galaxy S8, head over to the Settings
  2. Scroll down through the screen to find the Apps menu and press the three-dot menu to select Show system apps.
  3. You will now be able to see the Samsung-specific apps as well, so scroll down to find and open the Camera
  4. Press the Force Stop button above and then head over to the Storage tab below.
  5. Now go ahead and hit the Clear Data and Clear Cache buttons in the Camera app and reboot your Galaxy S8.

Method 2: Change the storage mode

You can also try this: Fire up the camera app, head to its Settings, and now choose ‘Internal storage’ as the location where it saves the pics. This might help a lot if your default storage was SD card, which could be slow to save the camera’s output.

Method 3: Wipe the device cache

The cache memory of any device includes temporary files not just from the system, but the apps and services that are installed on the device. In the case of Android devices, stagnant cache files can often cause errors, especially after a major software update.

  1. Turn off the Galaxy S8, and then press and hold the Volume Up, Bixby, and Power button simultaneously.
  2. Release the Power button when the Samsung logo appears, but continue to hold other buttons
  3. On the Android recovery screen, use the Volume Down button to navigate down to wipe cache partition and press the Power button to select it.
  4. Use the Volume Down button to select Yes — delete all user data, and then press the Power button to confirm.
  5. Wait for the reset to finish and press the Power button when prompted with the message to Reboot system now.

Method 4: Factory reset the Galaxy S8

Although the two aforementioned steps should most likely resolve the issue of the Camera app crashing on your Galaxy S8, you might have to switch to the final solution of resetting your device completely.

  1. Head over to the Settings app and open the General Management
  2. Tap the Reset button and select Delete All to confirm your action.
  3. You might have to enter your Samsung account credentials to go ahead with the process.

There have also been reports that changing the default storage mode of the Camera app from SD Card to internal memory also resolves the “Camera keeps stopping” error from popping up again and again.

  1. Hello,

I am having the same issue with a Samsung S8 after updating to the last software version.

    So far I have tried:
1.- force stop camera, erase data and cache.
    2.- Reboot in safe mode
    3.- Factory reset.
    4.- wipe cache partition.
5.- use *#0*# code to test with MegaCam. With this test the camera test and front camera says “Number of Cameras 0”.

Also yesterday during the whatsapp, instagram and facebook crash my Camera did work for a few minutes and then went back to the same error.

    Any ideas?
