Google’s standalone AR headset prototype has a quad-core Qualcomm processor

At the CES 2018, Google introduced the first standalone VR headset dubbed Lenovo Mirage Solo and apparently, the company has now turned attention to a standalone AR headset, WinFuture reveals. The German publication notes that Google is working with Taiwanese company Quanta, a partnership we’ve seen before with respect to the Google Pixel C, but the project is said to be in infancy.

Dubbed Google A65, the standalone AR headset will reportedly emulate Microsoft’s HoloLens not only in design but also in the target market, thus moving away from what we know of the Google Glass technology. Yes, this implies this technology won’t be mainstream anytime soon unless we are talking about the likes of Pokemon Go and co.

Another interesting tidbit is that the Google A65 will be powered by a quad-core Qualcomm QSC603 processor that is based on ARM architecture. Being a standalone device means it’ll be self-contained, thus including built-in cameras and microphones.

Since the Google A65 is only a prototype at this point in time, there is still no word on when to expect it to materialize. With this in mind, a lot could change between now and then, so expect a lot more rumors to come in the future.
