Google Glass Enterprise Edition 2 coming this year with more focus on performance and battery life

Google Glass Enterprise Edition 2

When Google unveiled the first edition of Google Glass, it envisioned a wearable future where mainstream consumers would be deeply immersed into augmented reality (AR) in their day-to-day lives, but years down the line, this isn’t the case.

Google saw things weren’t going as expected and back in 2017, the search giant started directing this product to the business class with the launch of the Google Glass Enterprise Edition. The device had been in the rumor mills for a couple or so years before it went live and its again happening.

Last year, 9to5Google bumped into FCC documents with details of what the publication believed to be the second-generation Google Glass Enterprise Edition. The documents didn’t give out much about the device, but from the image shared, it was clear that the new Glass would be a small upgrade over its predecessor, more so the design.

Not long after, the same publication also gave us an early look into the specs thanks to leaked benchmarks. The specs included a Snapdragon 710 chipset with an LTE modem, 3GB RAM, a 32MP sensor that can record 1080p videos at 120fps or 4K videos at 30fps, Android Oreo (?) and also support for Bluetooth 5.0 and 802.11ac Wi-Fi.

Now, in the latest developments, photos of the said Google Glass Enterprise Edition 2 (tentative name) have surfaced thanks to a Brazilian outlet. From the images, we can see that a new USB-C port will replace the long-serving magnetic pin-based system as the charging port, which is just about the only major design change.

Generally, the new Google Glass doesn’t have major design changes and apparently, this is because the company chose to focus more on improving performance and battery life. It’s likely that the device will be unveiled at the upcoming Google I/O 2019 in May, so we should be getting more details about it sooner or later.
