Samsung in April released a huge software update to the international variants of the three Galaxy S10 handsets that added a dedicated Night mode to the stock camera app. By now, you probably know what this feature is meant for – improved low-light photography, much like what Google did with Night Sight and OnePlus with Nightscape.
Now, to make it even better, Samsung is rolling out an updated version of the Night mode, this time allowing users to capture Night mode photos with the ultra-wide angle lens instead of the standard lens alone.
Given how narrow the wide-angle lens is on the Galaxy S10 phones, you might still not get good photos even with this feature because of the amount of light the lens is able to allow in, but it’s definitely better than the initial release back in April.
Another change the latest update adds to the Galaxy S10 and S10+ is support for Live Focus on the telephoto lens. Yes, you can now capture Live Focus using either the telephoto lens or the already supported ultra-wide angle lens.
What this means is that you can capture zoomed-in bokeh photos without moving physically, a luxury that Galaxy S10e users miss out due to the lack of a telephoto lens. But as noted, the ultra-wide lens can still come in handy for the S10e, but you’ll have to physically move to capture close-up photos.
When is the update coming my way?
You are probably asking when this update will arrive on your Galaxy S10e, S10 or S10+ handset. Well, for those using the Exynos variants, the update is arriving as part of the latest May 2019 security patch. The update was first released a week ago but halted shortly after users started reporting freezing issues.
Samsung fixed the issues and later released a patched version with build number ASE6, which is now available for download. As for the Snapdragon variants of the S10 trio, we still don’t know when this update will be released, but it should be soon, probably with the upcoming June 2019 security patches.
