How to force restart Galaxy S10, S10 Plus, and S10e when it stops responding

Galaxy S10 Plus Force Reset

Samsung’s latest flagship devices which are the Galaxy S10, S10 Plus, and the affordable Galaxy S10e are the devices to beat this year. All three devices pack in the latest and greatest specifications and those who have pre-ordered their S10 device are now receiving the device starting today.

All three S10 devices pack in the latest Snapdragon 855 or the Exynos 9820 chipset based on the region coupled with 6GB RAM all the way up till 12GB RAM depending on the variant and model ordered.

However, even having the best specs does not mean you won’t run into any issues at all. At times you might end up with a frozen device which has completely stopped responding due to various reasons.

Fortunately, Samsung has built in a kill-switch that helps you force restart the Galaxy S10, S10 Plus, or the S10e no matter what the situation is.

How to force shutdown and restart the Galaxy S10, S10 Plus, and the S10e

Using a particular combination of buttons, you can force your Galaxy S10, S10 plus, and the S10e to restart the system. Here’s how to do this.

  • Press and hold the Power button and the Volume Down button simultaneously until the device screen turns off.
    • May need to press and hold for more than 7 seconds
    • It will shut down and restart automatically
  • If the device screen stays black and you’re unable to see if it has turned off, keep holding down the Power and Volume Down buttons until you feel a vibration.

  1. My phone (s10e) stopped working while I was on a video call on Viber. I tried several times to force shutdown and restart, and holding the 2 buttons for more than 10 seconds too, but still nothing… I see the frozen image (the last one from the video call) and nothing I can do… Please help

    1. My s10e did the same while I was on Viber 20 minutes ago! Was that a coincidence or is there a connection with Viber??? Anyway, I googled it on my laptop and shut down my phone. It took around 20 seconds, more or less, but it worked. Just keep holding down the power button and the volume down buttons until it shuts down.

  2. This happened on my S10e for the first time ever today. I tried to wake it up first thing this morning and it wouldn’t respond.
The screen stayed blank. If I held down just the power button, the “Restart”/”Shutdown” options would appear and respond to the first tap, but on the second tap, it would register the tap but not action it.

I followed the instructions on this page. I held down the power and vol down buttons and it restarted ok. Thank you!
