How to fix ‘Message not sent’ error on Android

Every operating system faces an issue or two from time to time. If you are an Android user, you may have come across a few bugs while using your smartphone or tablet. There is usually a way to fix a bug and that’s what we will try to do here.

Now the bug in question here is related to SMS Messages on Android. Several users have been reporting that sometimes they see an error that states ‘Message not sent’ in the Notification panel even when the message has been sent. Most of the users who face this issue are using an older version of Android.

Nevertheless, the issue can get very annoying. Tapping on the ‘Message not sent’ notification doesn’t do anything useful either. It just opens the Messaging app and doesn’t show the message that hasn’t been sent. Swiping on the notification does clear it, but it comes back every time the Messages app is launched.

Again, this doesn’t affect the phone’s functionality, users are able to send and receive texts. It is just that annoying “Message not sent” notification that never seems to go away. Not to worry though, we may have a possible solution to this problem.

How to fix ‘Message not sent’ error on Android

The solution is simple and involves installing of a third-party messaging application. After installing the app, you will have to perform a few steps, and the problem seems to disappear. You can continue using the stock messaging app if you want and uninstall the third-party app.

  1. Download the Handcent Next SMS app from the Play Store.
  2. Open the app and make it your default SMS app.
  3. Now in the app, tap on the Hamburger Menu button on the top right.
  4. Select Delivery report.
  5. Check if there are any undelivered messages and delete them.

That’s about it. Now the ‘Message not sent’ error will not appear on your device. You can now continue to use this app, or you can uninstall it and go back to the stock messaging app. The issue should be fixed now.
