Starting today, you will be able to send higher resolution photos to your friends and family via the Facebook Messenger app. The update will be available for both iPhone and Android devices.
According to Facebook, people share over 17 billion photos a month on the Messenger app. That’s a lot of photos, but not very high quality ones. So far, you could send a photo with a maximum resolution of 2 megapixel, that’s 2K. Anything over that would be compressed, spoiling the image quality.
Now though, the social network is upping that resolution to 4K, which means you can send photos that have more than 8MP resolution. This also means that the photos your share through the app will be more clearer and have more detail.

The 4K photos supported by the Messenger app can have a maximum resolution of 4,096 x 4,096 pixels. Most smartphones these days can take images in that range, so this is a great update for the photo bugs who use Messenger a lot.
You will need to update the Messenger app on Android smartphone to be able to send 4K photos. Also, the feature is currently only rolling out to a select set of countries that include, US, Canada, France, Australia, the UK, Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, and South Korea. It will be available in more regions in the next few weeks or months.
