How to install the MIUI 10 update

You need to install the MIUI 10 update using a custom recovery like TWRP. So, you need to have TWRP, which may require you to unlock the bootloader of your device first.

The MIUI 10 update is available for download for the Redmi Note 5 Pro for some time now. It was available as MIUI 10 version 8.5.31 till now, but today, a newer version, 8.6.6 was released by Xiaomi, and it’s now available for download too.

Note: This guide is only for the recovery flashable files in .ZIP format. If the file you downloaded from the table is in .TGZ file format, then it’s flashable only via fastboot, for which, use this guide on how to install Xiaomi firmware using fastboot.

  1. Install the TWRP recovery on your Xiaomi device.
  2. Download the required files:
    1. Get the MIUI 10 update from above.
    2. Any of the two Google Apps (Gapps) file from below (only for non-Global ROMs).
    3. DM verity disabler file, lazyflasher, from here.
  3. Transfer the downloaded files (MIUI 10 update, Gapps, and Lazyflasher) to your Xiaomi device.
  4. Reboot to recovery mode to access TWRP recovery.
    1. Power off your Xiaomi handset.
    2. Press and hold Volume down and Power buttons together until you see anything on the screen. You will see TWRP soon.
  5. [Optional] Select ‘Wipe‘ from the TWRP main menu and do a ‘wipe to Factory Reset’ on the bottom of the screen.
└ Note: This will factory reset your device. Skip this step if you don’t want to factory reset your device, that is, if you are already on MIUI 10 update.
  6. On the TWRP main menu, tap on ‘Install‘ and select the MIUI 10 update file that you transferred to your device above. After selecting the .zip file, do ‘Swipe to Confirm Flash’ on the bottom of the screen to begin the custom ROM installation process. This may take some time.
  7. Once your ROM is successfully flashed, you’ll see ‘Wipe cache/dalvik‘ option, select it and then do ‘Swipe to wipe’ on the bottom of the screen.
  8. [Only for non-Global ROMs] Install the Gapps file the same you installed the MIUI 10 update file. If you are flashing a global ROM like MIUI 10 8.6.14 global beta, then you don’t need to flash the Gapps file.

Is MIUI 10 working?

Well, the MIUI 10 update has been released in China only at the moment. But because it has English as an option too, you can go ahead and install it. Do know though that some parts of the ROM are still in Chinese, so you may find the Chinese language at some rough corners of the ROM.

But it’s good enough if you really want to experience it now without waiting for Xiaomi to roll it out for global variants. Given it’s a beta version, you can expect some issues here and there, but more on that below.

MUI bugs and issues?

Update [June 16, 2018]: The Global ROM 8.6.14 is a stable and much better ROM that you can give a try. There are no issues reported so far, but in case you experience any issue on 8.6.14, just perform a factory reset, and then install it again. On clean install like this, users are pretty happy with the performance of MIUI 10 update.
