How to install MIUI 10 update [8.8.2 available]

MIUI 10 update

Update [August 03, 2018]: The MIUI 10 update has reached version 8.8.2 today. You will find the download links of MIUI 10 8.8.2 firmware for the various Xiaomi devices below. The 8.8.2 update mainly focuses in fixing little bugs here and there, but that should not undermine the important stability improvements an update packs.

With the release of not just one, but 3 Mi 8 flagship smartphones this week, Xiaomi is breaking the barrier of what defines a budget flagship smartphone. But these devices were not the only big news the company riled up the people with, as it unveiled the MIUI 10.

The latest iteration of Xiaomi’s Android-based ROM is expected to bring design changes, performance improvements and so much more.

MIUI 10 download

Well, the update isn’t available for a lot of Xiaomi device at the moment, but it’s available already for a handful of them — which is also pretty impressive. You already have the MIUI 10 update available for the Xiaomi current flagship (besides the Mi 8), the Mi Mix 2S, while the most popular budget flagship of Xiaomi, the Redmi Note 5 Pro has also got one. Besides the two top-end and low-end devices, the latest Mi 5 and the Mi 6 users are getting the MIUI 10 update as a treat, too.

MIUI 10 beta ROM types

Beta type Required Details
Public beta Settings app Most preferred ROM. It’s super easy to install as you can use the System update option under Settings > About phones for this. No need of TWRP or even the recovery mode. Easiest, and thus most preferred: You don’t need to flash files like Gapps and Lazyflasher for these ROMs.
Global beta TWRP recovery (unlocked bootloader) These ROMs are meant for users outside China, and thus come with Google Apps pre-installed. You will need TWRP recovery to install these ROMs. You will also need to install the lazyflasher file to avoid bootloop after flashing this.
Closed beta TWRP recovery (unlocked bootloader) These ROMs are meant for Chinese users, and thus do not have Google Apps pre-installed. You will need TWRP recovery to install these ROMs, but don’t forget to install the Gapps file too to get Google Apps. They do come with the English language, but you might find only Chinese in some screens/pages.
Chinese beta TWRP recovery (unlocked bootloader) Same as Closed beta. May not have the English language, though.

How to install the MIUI 10 update

Install of the MIUI 10 update depends on the kind of file you have. If a public beta is available for your device, you should download that, and avoid global, closed or Chinese beta ROMs. That’s because installing public beta is super easy. Here are some details about the type of beta ROMs available for the MIUI 10 update.

You need to install the MIUI 10 update using a custom recovery like TWRP. So, you need to have TWRP, which may require you to unlock the bootloader of your device first.

Note: This guide is only for the recovery flashable files in .ZIP format. If the file you downloaded from the table is in .TGZ file format, then it’s flashable only via fastboot, for which, use this guide on how to install Xiaomi firmware using fastboot.

  1. If your MIUI 10 update is a public beta ROM, then do this:
    1. Download the MIUI 10 update (public beta).
    2. Transfer it to the downloaded_roms folder on your Xiaomi device.
    3. Backup important data and files (everything will be deleted).
    4. Go to Settings > About phone > System update > tap the 3-dot button in the top right > Choose update package > select the MIUI 10 update file.
    5. That’s it. The system will start decrypting the file, and install it automatically for you. Wait for it to finish the process, which may take 10-30 mins.
→ Ignore the steps below as the below is only for non-public ROMs.
  2. Now, this step and the steps below are for the global beta, closed beta, and Chinese beta ROM type. Installing public beta file is easy, as given above, but the instructions below will work with public beta too anyway.
→ First of all, Install the TWRP recovery on your Xiaomi device.
  3. Download the required files:
    1. Get the MIUI 10 update from above
    2. DM verity disabler file, lazyflasher
    3. Any of the two Google Apps (Gapps) file from below (only for closed and Chinese ROMs, not for global beta):
  4. Transfer the downloaded files (MIUI 10 update, Gapps, and Lazyflasher) to your Xiaomi device. (Don’t transfer Gapps if you are using Global/Puublic beta file.)
  5. Reboot to recovery mode to access TWRP recovery.
    1. Power off your Xiaomi handset.
    2. Press and hold Volume down and Power buttons together until you see anything on the screen. You will see TWRP soon.
  6. Select ‘Wipe‘ from the TWRP main menu and do a ‘wipe to Factory Reset’ on the bottom of the screen.
└ Note: This will factory reset your device. Skip this step if you don’t want to factory reset your device, that is, if you are already on MIUI 10 update.
  7. Tap on the Wipe button again, and now tab on Format data button. Type yes on the next screen and then hit enter key to to confirm and format the data partition.
  8. On the TWRP main menu, tap on ‘Install‘ and select the MIUI 10 update file that you transferred to your device above. After selecting the .zip file, do ‘Swipe to Confirm Flash’ on the bottom of the screen to begin the custom ROM installation process. This may take some time.
  9. Once your ROM is successfully flashed, you’ll see ‘Wipe cache/dalvik‘ option, select it and then do ‘Swipe to wipe’ on the bottom of the screen.
  10. Install lazyflasher file too the same way.
  11. [Only for Chinese/Closed beta ROMs] Install the Gapps file the same you installed the MIUI 10 update file.
  12. Tap on the ‘Reboot System’ button to restart the device. Done!

Xiaomi EU custom ROMs (unofficial)

Note that since this is an unofficial ROM, the typical methods of installing the update won’t work. Instead, you need to get a little geeky by first of all unlocking the bootloader of your device (if not yet unlocked). At the moment, not all Xiaomi devices are supported, but support for more devices is on the way.

Here’re the download links of Xiaomi.eu custom ROMs:

To install, you can use the guide above to install the Closed beta ROMs.

MUI bugs and issues?

Update [July 07, 2018]: The public beta ROM is now available for some Xiaomi devices. This ROM is better, even suitable for daily use but still, don’t expect it to be as fluid and stable as the stable ROM, which isn’t available for MIUI 10 update yet.

Update [June 16, 2018]: The Global ROM 8.6.14 is a stable and much better ROM that you can give a try. There are no issues reported so far, but in case you experience any issue on 8.6.14, just perform a factory reset, and then install it again. On clean install like this, users are pretty happy with the performance of MIUI 10 update.

Update [June 1, 2018]: For the MIUI 8.5.31 closed beta Chinese ROM, users have reported that most of the features are working on their device, whether that be from people having Redmi Note 5 Pro as their daily driver, or the Mi 5, Mi 6, and Mi Mix 2S.

Reported issues:

  • Mi AI
  • Chinese language at some places

The new version 8.6.6 of the MIUI 10 fixes some bugs and makes the overall experience a tad better.
