Unlocked Galaxy S8 is receiving July update as build DSG1

The Galaxy S8 is now over 2 years old but thankfully, the updates haven’t slowed down much even if we talk about the carrier and unlocked models in the US.

Today, the unlocked Galaxy S8 handsets in the US are in for another treat. The July update is now available for both the unlocked Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus, coming in as G950U1UES6DSG1 and G955U1UES6DSG1 respectively. The unlocked models come with the ‘U1’ code in their model number.

The DSG1 update doesn’t come with a heavy changelog. Besides installing July 2019 security patches, the builds bring general bug fixes, improved device stability, and some performance improvements. Samsung lists the AT&T’s unlocked models but given the fact that they don’t have separate pages for other carriers, it’s fair to assume that AT&T’s support pages (see source links below) apply to all the unlocked models, even though sold by different carriers.

After receiving an update to Android Pie in the first week of April, the unlocked S8 models have received four updates now. Sure, they all relate to the latest security patches as available but with One UI already available, we didn’t expect any major updates for the S8 devices anyway.

Speaking of which, the Galaxy S8 handsets won’t be receiving an update to Android Q, and thus, are also ineligible for the One UI 2.0 update that Samsung plans to release alongside Q. Let’s hope a team of developers is able to port the One UI 2.0 to S8 sets when it’s available for the Galaxy S10 , S10 Plus, S10e, and Galaxy S9 sets in 2020.

The article was edited to make the correction for mention of unlocked models in place of AT&T models.
