Asus ZenFone 6 unveiled with yet another whacky no-notch design

Asus ZenFone 6

Smartphone vendors have been coming up with different ways of going around the hugely divisive notch design. Lately, we’ve seen things like cutouts in the display to accommodate the selfie camera like in the case of Samsung Galaxy S10, others like OnePlus 7 Pro are using a motorized pop-up selfie camera to avoid the notch, while the Galaxy A80 has a rotating camera.

Now, Asus has just come up with another whacky way of getting rid of the notched display in favor of a full-screen design. In the Asus ZenFone 6, you have a device that boasts the first ever Flip Camera mechanism that uses the same dual-lens setup as the front and rear cameras.

By default, the motorized camera is on the back, but it flips up as shown below when you want to take a selfie.

While the Flip Camera is definitely the highlight of the show, the ZenFone 6 has more to it than the no-notch design that results in an expansive 6.4-inch edge-to-edge display screen. Below is a rundown of the specs:

  • 6.4-inch FHD+ (2340×1080) LCD display
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor
  • 6GB or 8GB RAM
  • 64GB or 128GB or 256GB storage
  • Dual-lens 48MP (f/1.79) + 12MP (wide-angle, 125 degrees) Flip Camera
  • 5000mAh battery
  • Android 9 Pie with ZenUI 6
  • Extras: Bluetooth 5.0, USB-C, Rear-mounted fingerprint scanner, Face unlock, Quick Charge 4.0, 3.5mm audio jack, dual stereo speakers, etc.

Like a bunch of others before it, Asus ZenFone 6 has a 48MP main sensor, which means there is nothing about the camera that stands out other than the flip-up design. If anything, it will be down to how good Asus’ camera software is.

Still, you are getting a massive 5000mAh battery unit alongside some greatness in the shape of a 3.5mm audio jack and dual stereo speakers. Even better is that the ZenFone 6 can be had for just €499 when it starts selling in two weeks’ time.
