Asus ZenFone 5Z update brings Netflix HD support and fixes the YouTube notch issue

ZenFone 5Z

Asus’ ZenFone 5Z is one of the most exciting devices of 2018. The phone packs all the bells and whistles of a flagship phone, but it costs half of what such phones cost these days. The company has also been busy trying to make it an even better proposition for many who can’t afford the likes of Samsung Galaxy S9, Galaxy Note 9, Google Pixel 3 XL, LG V40 ThinQ, HTC U12+, and so on through regular software updates and you’ll for sure like the latest version rolling out.

Despite supporting DRM L1, users of the ZenFone 5Z have been unable to stream content from Netflix and Amazon Prime in HD or Full HD. This is similar to what is affecting the Xiaomi Poco F1, although the Chinese company says it is working on a software update to fix this issue. As for Asus, the update that solves this problem is arriving right now as version 80.30.96.221.

In addition to adding Netflix HD support, the new update also fixes the YouTube notch and shortcut widget icon issues as well as improves the detection frequency of AI scene detection in the camera app. Of course, you can also expect plenty of bug fixes and under-the-hood performance improvements after this update on top of the October 2018 Android security patch.

It’s an OTA update, meaning it will take some time before all ZenFone 5Z units get the download notification, so be patient. Alternatively, you may force the update via Settings > System > System updates.

  1. It’s 14-Apr-19, and there’s still no support for HD streaming on neither Netflix nor Amazon.

Who is to blame for this? Asus or content providers such as Amazon and Netflix?
