Android Pie AOSP ports now available for Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro, Redmi Note 4, Redmi 4X, Mi A1, Mi 3 and Mi 4

Android Pie update started rolling out a week ago and so far, only five smartphones are currently running the stable version. The Essential Phone joined the Google Pixels in receiving the update on the very day Google published the AOSP source code, the latter of which meant that the development community had now received the go-ahead to start working on Android Pie ports for other devices.

Of course, there’s always the option to wait for the official rollout, but what if your device isn’t on the list of devices that will receive Android Pie update? Or maybe it’s one of those midrangers that vendors usually take ages before rolling out major OS upgrades and you really can’t wait until Q3 2019? Well, if you own any of Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 5 Pro, Redmi Note 4, Redmi 4X, Mi 3, Mi 4 or even the Android One-based Mi A1, you don’t have to wait any longer because we already have working AOSP Android Pie ports for these devices.

The Redmi Note 5 Pro in question is codenamed whyred, which means the international model (Redmi Note 5 AI) is also in the mix. However, the port developers have noted that hardware encryption isn’t working at the moment, an issue that is also present in the Mi A1 Android Pie port. The Android One device also has a broken AOSP camera, but you can always turn to the Google Camera or the stock version. Other than these, everything else works perfectly.

While you can be sure Android Pie updates will at some point find their way to the Xiaomi Mi A1 and Redmi Note 5 Pro at some point in future, the same cannot be said of the likes of Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, Redmi 4X, Xiaomi Mi 3 and Mi 4.

Owners of these devices can now install AOSP Android Pie ports right away, but similar to their counterparts, not everything is working perfectly. Still, the threads for the ROMs don’t mention any major bugs in the ports, which is a good thing. If you want to know everything about the new Android Pie port before installing it on your Redmi Note 4, Redmi 4X, Mi 3 or Mi 4, hit the respective links below.

Note that none of these Android Pie updates is official and they require some knowledge of working with custom ROMs, so be sure you know what you are getting into. If you don’t but can still follow instructions to the latter, it shouldn’t be a big deal getting Pie on your device. Of course, you can always get any help you want from the devices’ respective threads on XDA Developers.
