Android P beta may come to Redmi Note 5 Pro, ZenFone 5, ZenFone Max Pro, and other Snapdragon 636-powered phones, too

Many will admit that they hardly saw it coming this soon, but what used to be the bragging rights for Google Pixel owners are no more as the search giant, thanks to Project Treble, has opened up the latest Android P developer preview to non-Pixel phones. Yes, it’s now possible to install Android P beta on several handsets and in fact, we have documented the necessary steps you need to jump on board the new P ship, if your device is eligible.

Speaking of eligibility, Google and Qualcomm have been working together behind the scenes to ensure that certain devices are ready for Android P when the OS is launched. According to the American chip maker, it has been working with the Mountain View Company…

…to implement its next-generation operating system, Android P, on select Qualcomm Snapdragon mobile platforms. By having early access to Android P, Qualcomm Technologies optimized its software on Snapdragon 845, 660 and 636 Mobile Platforms to ensure readiness for OEMs to upgrade to Android P at the time of launch.

By giving OEMs early access to the software, Google believes that it will be making the right steps towards addressing the issue of fragmentation. So far, the beta software has been confirmed for Essential Phone, OnePlus 6, Sony Xperia XZ2, Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S, Nokia 7 Plus, Oppo R15 Pro, and the Vivo X21 twins.

Other than the PH-1 that is powered by the Snapdragon 835, the rest are powered by either a Snapdragon 845 or Snapdragon 660 processor, the latest chipsets from Qualcomm. These are two of the chipsets that Qualcomm says it has already optimized for Android P, with the other being the Snapdragon 636 that powers a handful of popular phones in the lower midrange segment.

Given that devices powered by the SDM845 and SDM660 are already in there, it makes sense to think that those on the SDM636 will also join the party sooner or later. We are talking the likes of Asus ZenFone 5, Asus ZenFone Max Pro M1, and Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro, among others. The latter two have been causing waves in India since their launch a while ago, especially the Max Pro M1 thanks to its clutter-free version of Android.

It’s worth noting that this is just an educated guess of what could be in store, but we cannot guarantee that Snapdragon 636-powered devices will also get Android P beta. Still, it’s our wish that they do.
