Android Oreo: Bummer! A bug can cause an app to take longer time to launch on Oreo compared to Nougat

Even after rigorous beta testing, a few bugs seem to have crept their way into the final version of Android 8.0 Oreo update. Adding to that list is a new bug which can cause an app to take longer-than-usual time to launch, when compared to Nougat OS.

Apparently, here’s an issue raised at the Android Issue tracker website, where a user tried opening an app (unspecified) on a Nexus 5X, that particular app launched much faster on the Nexus 5X running Nougat OS, than one running Oreo.

Interestingly, this issue was nowhere to be seen when the same test was conducted on a Google Pixel. To further corroborate his claims, the user has also provided the app load times which are as follows:

Android Level Device This Time (milliseconds) Total Time (milliseconds) Wait Time (milliseconds) Starting Type
Test Android O Nexus 5X 350 350 366 hot start
Test Android N Nexus 5X 285 285 291 hot start
Test Android O Nexus 5X 838 838 850 cold start
Test Android N Nexus 5X 741 741 752 cold start

Cold start = kill the process and start. Also, the time taken mentioned above is in milliseconds — which is very important, in this case, because you will barely notice the difference in app load times in real time usage.

Nevertheless, the Android Team has acknowledged the issue and is currently looking into it.

That said, the very fact that the problem exists in the first place is quite ironic especially when Google is promising faster app load times with Oreo. This could easily be a one-off which is why we are going to cut some slack to the otherwise super-speedy Oreo OS.

We will update you with more details as we learn something new. Until then, keep a tab on this space.
