[Update: OTA link] Android One Marshmallow Update: When and How will you get it

Update 2 (6th Oct. 2015): Download Android One Marshmallow OTA
Update (6th Oct. 2015): Marshmallow OTA rolling out for Android One
Oh boy! we were completely wrong. Google is already pushing out the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update to Android One devices. A 338MB update with Android 6.0 is available for Android One devices in India.

The freshest and greatest version of Android is now officially announced by Google. The first Android devices to run the latest Android 6.0 Marshmallow update will be the newly announced Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X, following which the previous generation Nexus flagships will take the Marshmallow update. But what Google’s budget-end Android One devices?

Google promised to push latest Android software updates to Android One devices for up to 2 years. That was the main selling point of the device, since budget phones from various manufacturers often end up with almost zero software updates in their entire lifetime. Google’s Android One initiative was an effort to bring quality Android experience to budget smartphones.

Now, even the first generation Android One devices (Canvas A1, Spice Dream, etc) launched in Q2 2014, so it’s safe to say that all the Android One devices out there are eligible for Android Marshmallow update. Big question though is WHEN?

Back in 2014 when Android 5.0 Lollipop released, Google delayed the update to Android One devices by 60-90 days. It wasn’t what we expected from Google, but guess that’s what you get for a budget price. Anyway, it’s still better than AT&T, Verizon and the likes who delay update by 90 days for even the most premium of Android devices.

We expect the Android One Marshmallow update to be released either by end of Dec 2015 or early in 2016. However, if you don’t wish to wait so long, you can have Marshmallow update on your Android One within next 30 days by means of custom ROMs like CM13, which will release once source code for Marshmallow is merged into AOSP.

Google will push the Android Marshmallow source code into AOSP (Android Open Source Project) by 5th Oct. and once that is done, you’ll see a rapid influx of AOSP based ROMs for Marshmallow. The first one to hit your Android One device will probably be CM13, so keep an eye out for it. We’ll be sure to cover it along with installation instructions here as well.

How will you get Marshmallow Update on Android One ?

Well, officially, you’ll get Marshmallow on Android One via a FOTA (Firmware Over The Air) update. A SP Flashtool flashable firmware may also be available later, but you’ll get Marshmallow update via OTA first.

Below, is you can check for Marshmallow OTA on Android One devices:

  1. Open “Settings” on your Android One device.
  2. Select “About phone” » then “System updates”.
  3. Tap on “Check for update” button.
  4. If there’s an update available, your device will ask you to download and install it.

We hope Android One devices get the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update as soon as possible.

Happy Androiding!
