Android 8.0 Oreo for Galaxy Tab A 2017 and Tab A 10.1 2016 to release in October 2018

A handful of Android OEMs have already made their plans known in regards to Android 9 Pie updates, but Samsung is still struggling with Oreo updates for a good number of its devices. Still, you’ll agree that it’s way better to be late than never at all, at least for owners of the Galaxy Tab A 2017 and the 2016 Galaxy Tab A 10.1.

These two slates have just been cleared by the Wi-Fi Alliance with Oreo 8.0 on board, suggesting that the stable release could begin in about four or so weeks. We are looking at a possible October 2018 release for Oreo updates for both the Tab A 2017 and Tab A 10.1 from 2016, at least if everything goes according to plan.

While only the Sprint variant of the Tab A 10.1 2016 (SM-T587P) has been cleared to receive Oreo 8.0, multiple variants of last year’s model will soon jump to the newer OS. The model numbers include SM-T380 for the Wi-Fi-only model and SM-T385 for the LTE model – and their market-dependent variants as seen below.

When this materializes, it will be the first OS upgrade for the Tab A 2017 and second upgrade for the Galaxy Tab A 10.1 2016, which came preinstalled with Marshmallow and has since seen the Nougat update. It’ll be interesting to see how this story develops from now on.
