ZTE Axon 8 (A2018) with 4GB RAM and Snapdragon 820 spotted on GFXBench

ZTE announced the Axon 7 back in 2016 as one of the best budget friendly phones with great specsheet — and only one probably with Quad HD display, which is why many chose it over OnePlus 3 — and has since gone on to roll out Android 7.0 Nougat in February of this year.

Not one to be left behind with incremental updates, the Chinese OEM has also rolled out Android 7.1 in China and the United States, and the device just arrived in Germany this month. Now, it appears as though ZTE is preparing for the launch of its next-generation Axon device, the ZTE Axon 8, as a new GFXBench benchmarking document surfaces.

The GFXBench benchmark document shows specifications for the new ZTE Axon device that nearly match (confusing?) what we’ve already seen from the Axon 7, such as the 5.5-inch Quad HD AMOLED display with a 2,560 x 1,440p screen resolution, 4GB of RAM, the quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 SoC, Adreno 530 GPU, 8MP front camera, and pre-installed Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow (yes, the ZTE Axon 8 is expected to launch with Marshmallow instead of Android Nougat).

Now, we’re also seriously doubting the veracity of this listing, because we really do not expect the Axon 8 to be tested internally with Marshmallow on-board, when ZTE does have Nougat build with it ready.

There are some slight differences here, though, such as the 128GB of storage for the ZTE Axon 8 (bearing model number A2018) as opposed to the 64GB of storage in the Axon 7 (A2017), and the new 12MP rear camera (maybe dual 12MP sensors) as opposed to the 20MP back camera of the Axon 7.

These specs alone suggests that ZTE plans to position the Axon 7 as a competitive mid-ranger, all the while bringing some camera and storage improvements to help it possibly rival some high-end flagships if not make it the most competitive mid-ranger we’ve seen yet.

We’ll be back to bring you more on the ZTE Axon 8 as it arrives, but Axon 7 price drops at famous online retailers such as eBay ($70 off) and Newegg ($70 off) as of late hint that the world should see the ZTE Axon 8 arrive sooner rather than later.

  1. Hm seems weird the 8 would launch with 6.0? The Axon7 even runs 7.1

    1. it’s NOT the Axon 8. it’s the 7S. These people are clueless.

  3. Until proven otherwise this is NOT the Axon 8, but is Axon 7S which has been released in China. The Axon 8 will come later and will have Snapdragon 835.
