Update [January 13, 2017]: ZTE is now looking for beta testers for Axon 7 Nougat update in Germany. The beta program is very limited, as the company is only looking for 20 beta testers at this moment. For more details on how to get in the beta program, check out this page.
Update [January 04, 2017]: ZTE has revealed that they plan to release the Nougat update for the Axon 7 around 2-3 weeks later, so January release looks very well on the cards. They also said that support for Daydream will be baked into the Axon 7 Android 7.0 build, which is totally cool news too, given that Axon 7’s Quad HD display is more friendly — and kind of requirement — with VR than FHD display (hello OnePlus 3!).
Even though it’s not exactly a quick release by any means, but it’s certainly not bad, as ZTE’s biggest like-for-like competitor in OnePlus released its own Android 7.0 update only few days ago as OxygenOS 4.0, for OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T, while even Samsung is yet to start rolling out the Nougat update for its Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge.
Update [December 09, 2016]: ZTE USA has announced the Nougat preview program for Axon 7 today, which allows interested users to have a chance to get Android 7.0 preview build from ZTE on their device, before the stable release hits the market. This is specifically for model no. A2017U.
Update [December 08, 2016]: ZTE released a major bug fixer update for the model no. A2017G of the Axon 7, which improves camera and device performance, while also fixing several issues with the device, including messaging.
Update [November 11, 2016]: ZTE Germany has come forward and provided us a tentative release date when we could expect the company to roll out Axon 7 Nougat update. They earlier today tweeted that the Axon 7 Android 7.0 OTA could start rolling out in January 2017. So, the update looks still one month away, while it’s been exactly one month today when ZTE shared the Axon 7 Nougat build screenshots with us, given below.
Update [October 12, 2016]: ZTE has teased the Nougat update for the Axon 7 at their forums. User known by the name of Nipsih (moderator/Management), shared the pics of the Axon 7 ROM running Android 7.0. Yes, this is your Android 7.0 screenshot fest, getting you full preview of the ZTE Axon 7 Nougat update.
The ZTE Nougat update looks laden with ZTE’s custom skin MiFavor 4.2, and the August security patch looks installed. Maybe ZTE will merge the October patch, and make the 70 update available for download.
As you can see, ZTE is also giving you ZTE Root app, and although we’re yet to see it in action, we think it will allow you to root your Axon 7 on Android 7.0 pretty easily — maybe in one tap. If that happens, it would be really, really cool!
Android 7.0 Download? Well, the ROM isn’t available for download yet.
We hope it will soon come live now that the ZTE guys decided to share it. Update: ZTE Germany announced that the Axon a7 Nougat update will be released in January 2017. No new year gift for you, Axon 7 fans! Anyway, we will be sure to update this page when that happens, so keep watching this space, and check back regularly. Meanwhile, check out all the screenshots below.
Update (September 19, 2016): A new update has been announced by the ZTE for its Axon 7 today, which comes as software version A2017U Build 27 (or B27). Meanwhile, ZTE is planning to release the B03 update to European Axon 7 users, and the expected changelog is provided below.
Basically, the update will fix the sync issues with audio and video, 3G/4G icons appearing when connected to Wi-Fi, issues with social media video when playing music in background, and will bring improvements to camera focus and fingerprint sensor.
Lastly, it will pack in July and August security patches too. What’s not, sadly, part of the update is, Android Pay fix, and support for 60 FPS at Full HD resolution. While, bootloader unlock is still under consideration for European Axon 7 users.
The release of B03 update for the Axon 7 users in Europe could begin next week as an OTA. If you own Axon 7, be sure to have important data and files backup up to prepare for the update, although it’s not necessary thing to do.
Android Nougat for ZTE Axon 7
Expected release date: December 2016.
When Marshmallow released last year, with Nexus devices becoming first ones to get the OTA on 6th October 2015, ZTE was able to update its then flagship, the ZTE Axon Pro, by 22nd February 2016. That’s 139 days between release of 6.0 for Nexus and Axon Pro.
By same standards, and given the 22nd August 2016 release of Nougat OTA release for Nexus devices, we get 08 January, 2017, as the possible date around which ZTE could release the Android 7.0 OTA for its now flagship device, the Axon 7.
But we know that Google has kept the OEMs in the loop with Nougat update, sharing the 7.0’s code well before releasing it for the Nexus devices, so time taken by OEMs to prepare the Nougat update should be lesser than it took them for Marshmallow by good margin.
Hence, we would keep our expected Axon 7 Nougat update release date as December 2016.
Axon 7 Nougat US Release: Well, the update should arrive to US users of Axon 7 first, as right now too, ZTE has been favoring American Axon 7 sets before the European ones. So, December 2016.
Axon 7 Nougat Europe Release: The US release in Dec 2016 will get ZTE much-required feedback, and the company would be looking to release the update for its European Axon 7 users after quashing all known bugs from the feedback, which could take time. So, early February 2016 release looks likely for European Axon 7 sets.
