XXJVP for Galaxy S i9000 – Android 2.3.4 ROM with latest version of Gingerbread

XXJVP ODIN Install Screen

Samsung’s software team continues to impress us. First, they brought the Gingerbread update pretty soon and now they look set to update their Galaxy S phone with the latest version of Android for phone, Android 2.3.4 (Gingerbread). This feels so special because we Galaxy S owners has really hard time (read: very long time) getting the Android 2.2 Froyo update on our SGS which had launched with Android 2.1 Éclair.

But that’s past.

Now, we have the latest version of Android available to us. And even if it’s not launched by Samsung to your area, you can download the Android 2.3.4 ROM from link below and install it following the instructions set given below. Thanks Ficeto, who brought the news to us!

[info]This guide is applicable only for Samsung’s Galaxy S international version (i9000). If yours is Vibrant/Captivate/Fascinate/Epic 4G or any other Galaxy S variant, then this ROM — and Guide — is not for you, and that’s for definite.[/info]

Warning: Warranty may be void of your device if you follow the procedures given on this page. You only are responsible for your device. We wont be liable if any damage occurs to your device and/or its components.

Pre-installation thoughts:

  1. Backup your Apps and important data — bookmarks, contacts, SMS, APNs (internet settings), etc. This Android backup guide would help you.
  2. Disable Lagfix, if you’re using one. Use this Guide to disable/enable lagfix, if you need help!
  3. Drivers! — it’s important you’ve the proper drivers installed. For 32 bit (x86) Windows, download from here and for 64-bit (x64) Windows, download from here.

A very clean step-by-step guide is given below and would be more than enough for you to easily flash Android 2.3.4 Firmware on your Galaxy S. But in case you wanna watch the procedure on video, check out the video at the bottom of this post which shows flashing of an Android 2.3.3 Firmware — XXJVB — on Galaxy S. It would serve as a good guide to flash the Android 2.3.4 Firmware, XXJVP, too, since the since the process is almost same, except that there is no PIT file involved there and hence no ticking of the Re-partition box. The video is just for reference. You have to follow the steps given below only.

How to Install Android 2.3.4 Firmware on Galaxy S i9000 (international version):

  1. Download the Android 2.3.4 Firmware – XXJVP. Filename: XXJVP-234.ZIP. Size: 247.03 MB. Download Link.
  2. Extract the downloaded file XXJVP-234.ZIP to get these 4 files:
    1. CODE_I9000XXJVP_CL264642_REV03_user_low_ship.tar.md5
    2. GT-I9000-CSC-MULTI-OXAJVP.tar.md5
    3. MODEM_I9000XXJVP_REV_00_CL1019177.tar.md5
    4. s1_odin_20100512.pit
  3. Download Odin3 v1.7.zip from here — Mediafire Link. Extract the zip file to get Odin3 v1.7.exe.
  4. Disconnect your phone if it’s connected to PC.  Switch Off your phone. Wait for vibration to confirm complete switch off.
  5. Now, put it in Download Mode — press and hold these keys together: Volume_DOWN+Home+Power.
  6. Open Odin (from step 3). Connect your phone to PC now. You should get the message “Added! !” under the Odin’s message box.
  7. Important, tick the ‘Re-Partition’ checkbox while also keeping ‘Auto Reboot’ & ‘F. Reset Time’ checkboxes ticked. All the 3 checkboxes will be ticked.
  8. In Odin, place these files (check out the screenshot given at the top for help):
    1. In the PDA box, select this file (from step 2.1) — CODE_I9000XXJVP_CL264642_REV03_user_low_ship.tar.md5
    2. In the Phone box, select this file (from step 2.3) — MODEM_I9000XXJVP_REV_00_CL1019177.tar.md5
    3. In the CSC box, select this file (from step 2.2) — GT-I9000-CSC-MULTI-OXAJVP.tar.md5
    4. In the PIT box, select this file (from step 2.4) — s1_odin_20100512.pit
  9. Double check everything said in step 7 and 8 above. Your Odin’s window should look real similar to the image at the very top — which is my Odin’s screen while I flashed the XXJVP on my super Galaxy S.
  10. Now, hit the START button to let the process begin. When process at Odin finishes your phone will automatically reboot. You can unplug the cable now.

When your phone has restarted, you are on the XXJVP Android 2.3.4 Firmware on your phone. Congrats!

Check your phone’s version here: Press Options -> Settings -> Scroll down and select About Phone -> Scroll down and check your version.

UPDATE: This guide here would help you Root XXJVP Firmware.

  19. Thank you! After struggling to update Eclair via Samsung Kies for over a year, this post has helped me update my i9000 with Gingerbread. Your step by step instructions worked just as advertised. Thanks again :)

  20. Hey, thanks for the all your work on 2.3.4. Best resource I found and with full info on rooting made it a breeze. However, SMS text messages, I’m still stuck. I have already tried Go to Phone Dialer, and press: *#*#4636#*#*
     2. Select Phone information and when i type the message centre in (optus australia +61411990001) it always throws up ‘UPDATE ERROR’ Ive had the same problem with darky’s 10.1, cyanogen 7.  having spent a few hours at it now i’ve run through loads of different options with ‘set preferred network type’ and ‘toggle DNS check on/off’ cant find any help on this anywhere.

  21. [smsc message centre number for text messages solved]

Optus Australia SMSC – +61411990001   is converted (see link below to .twit88.com…) and replaced in android with 07911614910900f1  other settings network type: gsm/cdma auto (PRL) & Toggle DNS check NOT ALLOWED.
AFTER SETTING, REBOOT THE PHONE. May have to re-input setting.

Notice the replaced number has 0791 at the beginning – this is an international standard there after the 07911 the numbers in pairs are reversed.
    Like this…. 61 41 19 90 00 1   becomes === 0791 16 14 91 09 00 f1 Just reverse the pairs. However some numbers like mine are odd numbered so ‘f’ is added to bring the numbers back positives.

http://www.twit88.com/home/utility/sms-pdu-encode-decode —- for your conversion, more clues on the .xda. link above.

     1. Go to Phone Dialer, and press: *#*#4636#*#*
     2. Select Phone information
     3. Scroll down to bottom of the screen, you’ll see the field for SMSC setting.
     4. [Optional] Click Refresh to see current SMSC number.
     5. Change the SMSC number as you want. Then, click Update)

Yes, you can upgrade your phone to JVP (or better upgrade to JVQ which is
even newer and has upgraded SGS2 Internet app). What you need is a Galaxy S
      GT-*i9000 *android phone, that’s it.

I think JVP and the latest firmware JVQ both do not support Greek language.
If having Greek is a must to you, then I would recommend installing an

It’s okay.. this is not for India anyway and would take months to come to

i had same data issue, when you installed 2.3.4 it deleted your data settings. I called up my service provider and they were able to tell me what to do over the phone.
My wifi still does not work though

I’ve installed 2.3.4 from here, and also used the root guide given on this forum now I’d like to unroot my I9000, do i need to re-install 2.3.4 via Odin in order to un-root my phone or is there a quicker and easier way?

  70. Mauricio says:

I’ve did everything as written in the tutorial. Then when SGS starts after the flash, I get stuck on the home screen. It said to me to “Tap any text field”, but no matter where I tap, it doesn’t function. The only buttons working are the fisical buttons. Any Help?

Hey, cool down. It’s clear its your first time — don’t panic, your phone is compatible with this firmware 😉

      • Amir Selmani says:

Thanks for a quick reply Kapil.
But why I am not getting the update automatically via Kies?

        A message appears saying:

THis version of the device cannot be updated?

        • Kapil says:

This hasn’t been launched via Kies. That’s why it’s called just ‘leak’.

          • Amir Selmani says:

I though 2.3.4 was official release and people were automatically upgrading it via Kies ?
Then why I don`t get any other version after 2.2 that was released officially by Samsung?

          • Amir Selmani says:

Ok I upgraded it manually today and it worked just fine. So far I do not notice any issues.

          • Varun says:

2.3.4 has only been released for Samsung galaxy s 2

Hey after I upgrade to 2.3.4 my data network doesn’t work and home bottom either how to down grade please any help I call tmobile and they said the I have to bring it to a store or something

    • Kapil says:

Did you try it on international Galaxy S i9000 or what? It’s not meant for T-Mobile’s Galaxy S which is called Samsung Vibrant.

  76. Guest says:

Thank you very much, works fine! Quick installation and pleasant result!

  77. KonTemPt says:

Works perfectly so far! This should be the SGS update we already have instead of 2.3.3. Anyone with roaming data issues, you need to find out the APN for your carrier and enter those into your settings.
One happy aussie :) Thanks Kapil :)

    • KonTemPt says:

Just a warning though, updating to this will delete all of your stored messages, videos, music, apps and everything so make sure your back up. Using Kies to do that worked fine for me.

      • Kapil says:

Thanks for sharing your views…. i’ll take care to mention the deletion of data specifically (although we do suggest backing phone data and apps for that before the guide begins).

is it possible to completely wipe my galaxy and run official software released by samsung?

    • Jordan says:

Kapil – why do you reply to other’s but not to me? it’s a simple YES or NO, and if so, HOW

      • Kapil says:

Ohh, that’s purely coincidental. My apologies for that.

You can wipe your phone using Factory/Reset option in settings or from recovery. If you want to update from Kies (Samsung’s official software), you’ll need to flash the firmware that was released by Samsung in your region. Only after that, Kies will recognize your phone and will act accordingly. So, it’s possible but it’s tricky.

When I create a detailed post on “How to use Kies again after flashing leaked firmwares” I will let you know.

  82. rev says:

    Hi friends,

i was an iPhone user since 2007 but now i bought Samsung Galaxy S GT-i9000, it has “Movistar” logo on its back,

i m completely noob on Android so please guide me.

when i bought my phone it was on 2.0 Eclair then i connected my phone with my laptop with data cable and Samsung Kies.

    After connecting:

Samsung KIES showed me Gingerbread Updates

So First KIES updated my phone to 2.2 Froyo

And then it updated it to 2.3.3 Gingerbread.

“””i have read many posts here and as far as i know i think i m on Stock
firmware and i updated my phone using Official updates from Samsung
KIES and one more thing i want to clear here is before updating my phone
my SIM CARD was working perfect no issues and after updating my phone
still my SIM CARD is working absolutely fine so i think my phone is
fully Unlocked (Please Clarify if i m wrong)”””

So after that long time has been passed i am waiting for Official
updates for my phone of Gingerbread 2.3.4 or above but did not find any.

i used 2.3.4 on my friend’s phone it works much smoother and faster than
2.3.3 thats why i want to upgrade it unofficially because i cant update
    it officially.

Can you Please tell me the procedure to update my phone to the latest Gingerbread Stock version unofficially?

Here is what written in “About Phone”

    Model Number: GT-I9000
    Firmware Version: 2.3.3
    Baseband Version: I9000BGJV1
    Kernal Version: 2.6.35.7-I9000BGJV5-CL307695 root@DELL102#2
    Build Number: GINGERBREAD.BGJV5

    • Kapil says:

Your phone is perfectly eligible for so-called unofficial updates, since it’s gt-i9000.

The xxjvp above would work fine but even better is the xxjvs Android 2.3.5 firmware. Search for xxjvs on this site and install that — you’ll love it.

if the name of “odin” is *Odine3 v1.70* and not *Odine3 v1.70.exe* does that affects the procces plzz helppp

    • Kapil says:

It doesn’t affect anything. It’s .exe only, just that extension is hidden, which can be unhidden in folder settings in Windows.

You know, make sure you’ve drivers installed, and uninstall and reinstall them. Restart PC and restart phone. Do all this and try again.

  90. Manishmishra6 says:

Lakhs of thanks to Kapil, you are Genious

  91. A,H says:

When i tried it on kies, it said that my firmware cannot be upgraded.
If i did this, it will not affect the phone and it will work or not?
    Pls reply

    • Kapil says:

It will work on your phone. Just make sure your phone is GT-i9000. Btw, kies may still not work after this even though phone is running perfectly.

  96. Hiram G Austria says:

Dear friend, This its GREAT!! Thx for the article, links to downloads and the wonderful explanation ;0)

Just one question: does this needs any lagfix? or will keep going as smooth as now?

  97. Josh says:

hi there – great tutorial!  Just one question – your steps say to ensure that your repartition box should be ticked – but I noticed it wasn’t in the video?

    • Kapil says:

I think we didn’t use pit file either in the video. When you use pit file in Odin’s pit box, you gotta check the re-partition box.

      • Josh says:

ah ok.  So whats the benefit / consequence of ticking / not ticking the re-partition box?

        • Kapil says:

No benefits, it’s compulsary to use when yih use pit file, which tells the phone which takes care of partitioning on phone.

  98. AHK says:

    Thanks Kapil, Works perfectly
I have 1 question: Is this a custom rom or the standard rom?

Restart phone. Restart PC. Reinstall drivers. And more such stuff. And hope your windows PC recognizes your phone.

      • Michael says:

when the phone is on, it apears, after i put it in dowloading mode – it doesn’t. any other method ??

        • Kapil says:

You’re trying it in download mode, right? If not, connect to PC after switching to download mode, otherwise Odin won’t recognize it.

          • Michael says:

Tried with a notebook, worked ! the problem was in the drivers, i think !
