XXJVP for Galaxy S i9000 – Android 2.3.4 ROM with latest version of Gingerbread

Samsung’s software team continues to impress us. First, they brought the Gingerbread update pretty soon and now they look set to update their Galaxy S phone with the latest version of Android for phone, Android 2.3.4 (Gingerbread). This feels so special because we Galaxy S owners has really hard time (read: very long time) getting the Android 2.2 Froyo update on our SGS which had launched with Android 2.1 Éclair.

But that’s past.

Now, we have the latest version of Android available to us. And even if it’s not launched by Samsung to your area, you can download the Android 2.3.4 ROM from link below and install it following the instructions set given below. Thanks Ficeto, who brought the news to us!

[info]This guide is applicable only for Samsung’s Galaxy S international version (i9000). If yours is Vibrant/Captivate/Fascinate/Epic 4G or any other Galaxy S variant, then this ROM — and Guide — is not for you, and that’s for definite.[/info]

Warning: Warranty may be void of your device if you follow the procedures given on this page. You only are responsible for your device. We wont be liable if any damage occurs to your device and/or its components.

Pre-installation thoughts:

  1. Backup your Apps and important data — bookmarks, contacts, SMS, APNs (internet settings), etc. This Android backup guide would help you.
  2. Disable Lagfix, if you’re using one. Use this Guide to disable/enable lagfix, if you need help!
  3. Drivers! — it’s important you’ve the proper drivers installed. For 32 bit (x86) Windows, download from here and for 64-bit (x64) Windows, download from here.

A very clean step-by-step guide is given below and would be more than enough for you to easily flash Android 2.3.4 Firmware on your Galaxy S. But in case you wanna watch the procedure on video, check out the video at the bottom of this post which shows flashing of an Android 2.3.3 Firmware — XXJVB — on Galaxy S. It would serve as a good guide to flash the Android 2.3.4 Firmware, XXJVP, too, since the since the process is almost same, except that there is no PIT file involved there and hence no ticking of the Re-partition box. The video is just for reference. You have to follow the steps given below only.

How to Install Android 2.3.4 Firmware on Galaxy S i9000 (international version):

  1. Download the Android 2.3.4 Firmware – XXJVP. Filename: XXJVP-234.ZIP. Size: 247.03 MB. Download Link.
  2. Extract the downloaded file XXJVP-234.ZIP to get these 4 files:
    1. CODE_I9000XXJVP_CL264642_REV03_user_low_ship.tar.md5
    2. GT-I9000-CSC-MULTI-OXAJVP.tar.md5
    3. MODEM_I9000XXJVP_REV_00_CL1019177.tar.md5
    4. s1_odin_20100512.pit
  3. Download Odin3 v1.7.zip from here — Mediafire Link. Extract the zip file to get Odin3 v1.7.exe.
  4. Disconnect your phone if it’s connected to PC.  Switch Off your phone. Wait for vibration to confirm complete switch off.
  5. Now, put it in Download Mode — press and hold these keys together: Volume_DOWN+Home+Power.
  6. Open Odin (from step 3). Connect your phone to PC now. You should get the message “Added! !” under the Odin’s message box.
  7. Important, tick the ‘Re-Partition’ checkbox while also keeping ‘Auto Reboot’ & ‘F. Reset Time’ checkboxes ticked. All the 3 checkboxes will be ticked.
  8. In Odin, place these files (check out the screenshot given at the top for help):
    1. In the PDA box, select this file (from step 2.1) — CODE_I9000XXJVP_CL264642_REV03_user_low_ship.tar.md5
    2. In the Phone box, select this file (from step 2.3) — MODEM_I9000XXJVP_REV_00_CL1019177.tar.md5
    3. In the CSC box, select this file (from step 2.2) — GT-I9000-CSC-MULTI-OXAJVP.tar.md5
    4. In the PIT box, select this file (from step 2.4) — s1_odin_20100512.pit
  9. Double check everything said in step 7 and 8 above. Your Odin’s window should look real similar to the image at the very top — which is my Odin’s screen while I flashed the XXJVP on my super Galaxy S.
  10. Now, hit the START button to let the process begin. When process at Odin finishes your phone will automatically reboot. You can unplug the cable now.

When your phone has restarted, you are on the XXJVP Android 2.3.4 Firmware on your phone. Congrats!

Check your phone’s version here: Press Options -> Settings -> Scroll down and select About Phone -> Scroll down and check your version.

UPDATE: This guide here would help you Root XXJVP Firmware.

Its okay. Btw, having a quick efs backup is a good idea.

        1. Henry14 says: Reply

But to be able to back up te efs folder, you need to flash the device first. That’s already taking a risk in a way, right?

Android 2.3.4 has brought some big changes that were completely missing in
the Android 2.3.3 firmwares… the notification bar is black now and
drop-down’ed color is also much cool now. It’s great! What we need now is a
gtalk app with video feature that comes with Google’s Android 2.3.4 build.

2.2, I think you won’t have any complain with Android 2.3.4.

The data network does not work of some reason. Didnt with the 2.3.2 and dont with this upgrade. Can it be caused by this update? If so, is there an easy way to fix it?

    Thanks in advance!

    1. Cstrender says: Reply

Actually I had the same problem. Fixed it by going to settings–>wireless and network–>mobile networks–>access point names. there you need to create a new APN. The settings for your APN is found at your network providers homepage, or just google f.ex: APN vodafone.

  19. Thank you! After struggling to update Eclair via Samsung Kies for over a year, this post has helped me update my i9000 with Gingerbread. Your step by step instructions worked just as advertised. Thanks again 🙂

  20. Hey, thanks for the all your work on 2.3.4. Best resource I found and with full info on rooting made it a breeze. However, SMS text messages, I’m still stuck. I have already tried Go to Phone Dialer, and press: *#*#4636#*#*
     2. Select Phone information and when i type the message centre in (optus australia +61411990001) it always throws up ‘UPDATE ERROR’ Ive had the same problem with darky’s 10.1, cyanogen 7.  having spent a few hours at it now i’ve run through loads of different options with ‘set preferred network type’ and ‘toggle DNS check on/off’ cant find any help on this anywhere.

  21. [smsc message centre number for text messages solved]

Optus Australia SMSC – +61411990001   is converted (see link below to .twit88.com…) and replaced in android with 07911614910900f1  other settings network type: gsm/cdma auto (PRL) & Toggle DNS check NOT ALLOWED.
AFTER SETTING, REBOOT THE PHONE. May have to re-input setting.

Notice the replaced number has 0791 at the beginning – this is an international standard there after the 07911 the numbers in pairs are reversed.
    Like this…. 61 41 19 90 00 1   becomes === 0791 16 14 91 09 00 f1 Just reverse the pairs. However some numbers like mine are odd numbered so ‘f’ is added to bring the numbers back positives.

    http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-918481.html
http://www.twit88.com/home/utility/sms-pdu-encode-decode —- for your conversion, more clues on the .xda. link above.

     1. Go to Phone Dialer, and press: *#*#4636#*#*
     2. Select Phone information
     3. Scroll down to bottom of the screen, you’ll see the field for SMSC setting.
     4. [Optional] Click Refresh to see current SMSC number.
     5. Change the SMSC number as you want. Then, click Update)

Firmware Version 2.2.1, Froyo.BOJS5 bought in Singapore.

When I power on my phone T Mobile logo appears and followed by that GALAXY..the usual boot sequence. I want to get rid of this logo.

I went through the update instructions to Android 2.3.4. When i upgrade this with the above procedure will it clear off the T mobile logo !

    Please advise

Hello all. I am running ecclair still now. guess what…coudn’t update through kies. now my question is do i need to root my phone before following the nice instruction? or i can proceed simply what has been said. Thanks in advance.

    1. kvaju says: Reply

yes, you need to root youre phone.
first check if you can enter download and rescue mode before doing anything

      1. Kanakmahmud says: Reply

thanks for reply. Now i dont really know much about rooting…..how to do it with nice clear easy steps like this one. secondly how to check for download and rescue mode?

    2. Kapil says: Reply

You can install the firmware following the instructions above. Rooted device
      is not required.

How one can enter the download mode is given in the instructions above, you
can check that if you want.

Because it’s a KOR rom, don’t worry though. Not every ROM is for your area,

Hi, sorry to ask again, since I see that 2.3.4 might be better, I need to ask: can I use this method to update my i9000 who is still stuck on 2.1-update 1 (i9000zsjh1) Kernal version 2.6.29? Thanks.

i upgraded my samsung galaxy s i9000T to XXJVP rom yesterday. And since than my mobile is performing worst than before. Its draining battery like anythng.
My GPRS isnt working properly, its operating at a very low speed i’m not able to download files, small applications from market of even 2-3 MB is taking hours to download and most of the time the downloading/installation fails. Some widgets are not working e.g feeds and update isnt able to connect with my facebook account. To my surprise i cant do anything while i’m on call beacuse i’m nt allowed to minimize it. The only thing i can do is to see my contact list . Please help…. is it possible for me to switch back to stock version of android which i had earlier ???? please help ….

    1. Rajeev Sharma says: Reply

Also i would like to mention that i did the entire installation as per the instrctions given above but without rooting the phone. Is that the reason for all this under performance !!!!!

      1. Kapil says: Reply

And btw, this wasn’t exactly for i9000t man. Your name suggests you’re from
India but now did you manage to get ah-i9000t phone instead of a cool-i9000
international version that was being sold in India.

    2. Kapil says: Reply

Do Factory Reset from the phone’s recovery… This should fix it. But
remember, this will delete your settings and data, so make a backup before.

Btw, don’t worry, you can flash any other ROM quite easily if this somehow
      doesn’t work for you.

OK… serious problem here… how do I use Odin to flash a different OS onto this thing! I didnt read the little blue box that says this is not for the Vibrant!! I know stupid.. I thought it was an advertisement…. how do I reset the phone or how do I put on an operating system that will work? Thanks for your help!

    1. Kapil says: Reply

      Dude… Seriously, you’ve outdone other noobs :O

I think you can use Vibrant’s stock firmware to go back to Samsung’s default
      OS.

But just lemme check first what ROM is the best one. The procedures should
be similar since this will also involve Odin, so you want need separate set
      of instructions.

Hey, I think you should flash this stock firmware — T959UVKA7. But know this, We are not responsible for anything if any damage occurs to your phone.

Download the firmware from this link – http://www.multiupload.com/E5HF1W9MU4 (pssword is samfirmware.com). You can find all the vibrant firmwares here: http://www.samfirmware.com/WEBPROTECT-samsungusa.htm (register and login if required).

Use the Odin3 v1.7 and also use the .pit file that you already have from xxjvp flashing but don’t use any of the xxjvp file.

The file you download – T959UVKA7.rar – will have one tar file which is what you will put in the pda tab. Leave the other two tabs – Phone and CSC – blank. Then, put the .pit file in the PIT tab. Make sure all the three checkboxes are ticked — Re-Partition, Auto Reboot, F. Reset Time.

I think you already know hot to go to download mode — since you’ve flashed xxjvp. I hope it helps.

Once again, I have not tested anything on Vibrant (I don’t have this phone and in fact, never saw it in real), so you only will be responsible for anything you opt to do or not opt to do. You’ve been warned — and this isn’t advertisement (haha!) Good luck!

Man, I replied to you within 1 hour or so after our conversation yesterday. I think it was a little bit of a glitch in the wordpress  comments system — no support for replying back to disqus’s cystem is use here — which prevented you from getting the help and kept you waited. Anyways, it’s pasted below:

Try again. Remove the battery and put it back. Close and open Odin, too.
This should help — and make sure you’re following the guide *word to word*.

Kapil, I have 2 questions for my GT-i9000. First of all, I have upgraded my GT-i9000 to 2.3.3 through skies (DDJV6). Now, 1) Will I be able to upgrade to 2.3.4 xxjvp through ur guide? 2) Will gtalk video chat work in XXJVP ?

    1. Kapil says: Reply

You can follow the guide to upgrade your phone but I don’t think it’s got
with-video version of gTalk — but I think there is a hack for that which
can be flashed separately; and it’s available both for jv6 and jvp. So, if
you want to upgrade to xxjvp, you are good to go.

Btw, I noticed your wall post on fb page too. But replying back is here.

      1. Prabhu says: Reply

Kapil, I was planning to upgrade to jvp only for the video w/ version of gtalk. I would then go for gtalk mods for jv6 w/ video. Thanks for the reply.

Yes, you can upgrade your phone to JVP (or better upgrade to JVQ which is
even newer and has upgraded SGS2 Internet app). What you need is a Galaxy S

      1. Kapil says: Reply

Ohh, that’s purely coincidental. My apologies for that.

You can wipe your phone using Factory/Reset option in settings or from recovery. If you want to update from Kies (Samsung’s official software), you’ll need to flash the firmware that was released by Samsung in your region. Only after that, Kies will recognize your phone and will act accordingly. So, it’s possible but it’s tricky.

When I create a detailed post on “How to use Kies again after flashing leaked firmwares” I will let you know.

    Hi friends,

i was an iPhone user since 2007 but now i bought Samsung Galaxy S GT-i9000, it has “Movistar” logo on its back,

i m completely noob on Android so please guide me.

when i bought my phone it was on 2.0 Eclair then i connected my phone with my laptop with data cable and Samsung Kies.

    After connecting:

Samsung KIES showed me Gingerbread Updates

So First KIES updated my phone to 2.2 Froyo

And then it updated it to 2.3.3 Gingerbread.

“””i have read many posts here and as far as i know i think i m on Stock
firmware and i updated my phone using Official updates from Samsung
KIES and one more thing i want to clear here is before updating my phone
my SIM CARD was working perfect no issues and after updating my phone
still my SIM CARD is working absolutely fine so i think my phone is
fully Unlocked (Please Clarify if i m wrong)”””

So after that long time has been passed i am waiting for Official
updates for my phone of Gingerbread 2.3.4 or above but did not find any.

i used 2.3.4 on my friend’s phone it works much smoother and faster than
2.3.3 thats why i want to upgrade it unofficially because i cant update
    it officially.

Can you Please tell me the procedure to update my phone to the latest Gingerbread Stock version unofficially?

Here is what written in “About Phone”

    Model Number: GT-I9000
    Firmware Version: 2.3.3
    Baseband Version: I9000BGJV1
    Kernal Version: 2.6.35.7-I9000BGJV5-CL307695 root@DELL102#2

Dear friend, This its GREAT!! Thx for the article, links to downloads and the wonderful explanation ;0)

Just one question: does this needs any lagfix? or will keep going as smooth as now?

    1. Kapil says: Reply

Search and install xxjvs firmware. It’s based on Android 2.3.5, and works even better — and no need for lagfix both on jvp and jvs.

Appreciated man!! I’ll do it. Here its the link if anyone else want it:

hi there – great tutorial!  Just one question – your steps say to ensure that your repartition box should be ticked – but I noticed it wasn’t in the video?

    1. Kapil says: Reply

I think we didn’t use pit file either in the video. When you use pit file in Odin’s pit box, you gotta check the re-partition box.

      1. Josh says: Reply

ah ok.  So whats the benefit / consequence of ticking / not ticking the re-partition box?

        1. Kapil says: Reply

No benefits, it’s compulsary to use when yih use pit file, which tells the phone which takes care of partitioning on phone.

    1. Kapil says: Reply

Restart phone. Restart PC. Reinstall drivers. And more such stuff. And hope your windows PC recognizes your phone.

when the phone is on, it apears, after i put it in dowloading mode – it doesn’t. any other method ??

        1. Kapil says: Reply

You’re trying it in download mode, right? If not, connect to PC after switching to download mode, otherwise Odin won’t recognize it.

          1. Michael says:

Tried with a notebook, worked ! the problem was in the drivers, i think !

I tried this on my Samsung Galaxy S i9000 which had Froyo 2.2.1 and everything went fine till the last step where Odin finished installation and phone shutdown itself and NEVER STARTED AGAIN.

I tried all the followings but nothing works meaning PHONE DOES NOT TURN ON
    1. removed the battery and left it for 10 minutes and tried it
    2. holding the power down for several minutes
    3. holding the (VOLUP+HOME+POWER) for several minutes
    4. holding the (VOLDOWN+HOME+POWER) for several minutes
    5. connected the charger

It is just so frustrating for last two days. please suggest if any of you had faced similar issue and has got out of it.

    I will really appreciate it.

Download a firmware meant for your phone gt-i9003 and install that after booting your phone into download mode, using Odin.

I have installed this ROM and its working great 🙂 I want to install a module and it is not working cuz I think module loading/unloading is not enabled in the kernel by default (cuz I was able to fix the same problem on the emulator) How do I do it? I will have to recompile the kernel with the option enabled and reflash it rty? if so where can I get the XXJVP source?

Thank you & a very useful site 🙂
