Volvo self-driving car to launch on 2021 in partnership with Nvidia

Swedish carmaker Volvo has entered into a collaboration with automotive safety systems maker Autoliv and chipmaker Nvidia to manufacture self-driving cars. In fact, Volvo plans to launch the same by 2021.

Although self driving cars aren’t a new concept with Volvo announcing an autonomous car pilot scheme called ‘Drive Me’ earlier this year, Volvo aims to commercialize the concept with this new initiative and sell self driving cars to customers.

The necessary software for this venture will be developed and provided by Autoliv while Nvidia will take care of the computing part. Volvo also has plans to make the self-driving software produced by Autoliv to other car manufacturers.

The self driving cars manufactured by Volvo will be powered by Nvidia’s Drive PX2 supoercomputer. This supercomputer makes self driving possible by bringing in together data from 12 video streams all at on go. At the same time, it can process input from LIDAR, radar, and ultrasonic sensors as well.
