Aakash Android Tablet

Well, Android is an open source operating system and one can put it any use one wants. And some very good Indians chose to take Android — world’s leading mobile phone OS — and make it available to children for a very very very low price of $35. At the current currency rates, $35 is INR 1712/- which incidentally is even cheaper than the Spykar shirt I bought 2 days before for INR 1799/-.

The tablet will be called ‘Aakash’ — that’s ‘Sky’ in Indian language, Hindi (my fav language!).

And for those not in school but are already seeing their first tablet in Aakash, there is another version for you, called ‘UbiSlate’, which has same specs as that of Aakash (given below). UbiSlate is expected to cost around $70, which isn’t bad at all, either.

We’ll keep you updated with when it’s launching where and how to buy it, so be with us. And for now, lets see what’s packed inside the Aakash and UbiSlate.

Aakash/UbiSlate Android Tablet Specifications

  • Operating system: Android 2.2
  • Screen: 7″ resistive touch based
  • Processor: 366 MHz + HD video co-processor
  • RAM: 256 MB
  • Flash memory: 2GB + 2GB Micro-SD (expandable up to 32 GB)
  • USB ports: 2
  • Network: WiFi (GPRS & 3G options)

Well, for the rock-bottom price of $35/$60, it would be cruel to expect anything more than what Aakash is getting you.

Btw, it’s said Aakash costs around $50 to make and the Govt is paying subsidy to the tune of INR 2250 to launch it with $35 price. Moreover, it’s planned to further lower the price to $10. Amazing!

UbiSlate

We’re absolutely delighted to get our hands on this one, what about you?
