Lenovo ZUK Z1 gets official Lineage OS 14.1 ROM

The Lenovo-Motorola combination seems to be working goo at low- and mid-range mobile segments, as while ZUK series is doing decent enough, the Moto G series continues to rock. And when you are talking about a popular device with a good set of users, developers usually follow, provided the device in question is developer friendly in the first place, which is exactly the case with Lenovo ZUK Z1.

While Lenovo may not have any immediate plans for updating the ZUK Z1 to Nougat, which is out for the ZUK Z2 BTW, the device has found its savior in the the custom ROM development scenario. Starting today, Lineage OS ROM is officially rolling out for the ZUK Z1, bringing the Android 7.1.1 update for the device, albeit in an unofficial way, but at least users have a fair reason to rejoice now.

The ZUK Z1 LOS ROM is already available as a nightly, which is better than the experimental build, so, in case you were looking to give it a go, you can. We think the stable release would follow sooner or later, but we don’t have our hopes tied on the former.

Note: You must have a custom recovery like TWRP installed on your device to be able to install Lineage OS. Also, you will need to download and flash root add-on package separately as Lineage OS only provides root via ADB.

How to Install Lineage OS on ZUK Z1

  1. Download and transfer the Lineage OS ROM zip file and Gapps package zip file that you downloaded above to your ZUK Z1.
  2. Boot your ZUK Z1 into TWRP recovery.
  3. Select Wipe from TWRP main menu and do a Swipe to Factory Reset on the bottom of screen.
  4. Go back to TWRP main menu, tap on Install and select the Lineage OS .zip file that you transferred to your ZUK Z1 in Step 1.
  5. After selecting the .zip file, do Swipe to Confirm Flash on the bottom of screen to begin the custom ROM installation process. This may take some time.
  6. Once your ROM is successfully flashed, you’ll see Wipe cache/Dalvik option, select it and then do Swipe to wipe on bottom of screen.
  7. Now flash the Nougat Gapps file similarly, just the way flashed the ROM file.
  8. If you want root for apps, download and flash the root addon zip file as well.
  9. Once you’re done flashing all required files, reboot your ZUK Z1.

That’s all there is to it. Lineage OS is now installed on your Lenovo ZUK Z1.
