Backup!

Backup important files stored on your device before proceeding with the steps below, so that in case something goes wrong you’ll have backup of all your important files.

Step-by-step Guide

Required: Make sure you have unlocked bootloader of your Xperia Z5 Compact. Otherwise, you cannot flash TWRP recovery. For help, see this page about Xperia Z3 bootloader unlock, as the procedure is exactly same.

Step 1. Download the TWRP recovery file from above. Keep it in a separate folder on your PC. Extract this file to get recovery.img file, which is your TWRP recovery.

Step 2. Install required drivers:

Step 3. On your Xperia Z5 Compact, enable USB debugging. For this:

  1. Go to Settings > About phone, and then tap ‘Build number’ 7 times or until you see the ‘you’re now a developer’ message pop up.
  2. Go back to Settings, then choose ‘Developer options’. Find the ‘USB debugging’ option and use its toggle button to enable it. Accept warning by tapping on OK button.

Step 4. Connect your Xperia Z5 Compact to PC now.

You will get a pop-up as shown below on your phone when you connect for the first time after enabling USB debugging. Select ‘Always allow from this computer’ checkbox and then tap on OK button.

(It is possible you get this pop-up later on, like when issuing a command.)

Allow USB Debugging

Step 5. Now, open command window in the folder where you have the TWRP recovery file (recovery.img). For this:

  1. Open that folder and then left click on empty white space in the folder.
  2. Now, while holding shift key, right click on empty white space to get a pop-up as shown below.
  3. Now choose Open command window here option from that.

open command windows here

You will see a command window open up, with location directed to folder where you have the twrp recovery file.

Step 6. Boot your Xperia Z5 Compact into Bootloader/Fastboot mode.

For this, type adb reboot bootloader into command window and hit enter key. That’s it. Connect the device to PC then.

[Alternate] However, if the above command doesn’t work, then do it manually, as given below.
  • Power off your device and wait for 3-4 seconds after screen goes off.
  • Press and hold Volume up button and connect the device to PC using USB cable. Then let go of the Volume up button.

That’s it. You should see the LED light light in blue color, which means the Xperia Z5 Compact is in bootloader mode, also called fastboot mode.

Step 7. Test whether fastboot is working alright. For this, run the command given below. (You can also copy paste the command and then use enter key to run it.)

fastboot devices

→ Upon running command below, you should get a serial no. with fastboot written after it. If you don’t get fastboot written on cmd window, then it means you need to reinstall adb and fastboot drivers, or change restart PC, or use original USB cable.

Step 8. Let’s first test the TWRP recovery before actually flashing it. Run the following command in the command window.

fastboot boot recovery.img

Your device should boot into recovery mode, and present you TWRP recovery. Now, if you see TWRP is working good then go to next step to actually install it. However, if TWRP isn’t working, then force restart Xperia Z5 Compact if it doesn’t restarts automatically. For that, press and hold Power and Volume Up button together until device vibrates for 3 times.

Step 9. Flash Xperia Z5 Compact TWRP recovery now. If you are sure you want to install TWRP permanently, and that it’s working alright, then boot the device into bootloader mode. To enter bootloader mode directly from TWRP, tap on Reboot button and then on Bootloader.

Then run the following command with device connected to PC in bootloader mode.

fastboot flash recovery recovery.img

Step 10. [Optional] You will see TWRP recovery. Now, you must take a full backup of your phone, including system partition. In TWRP, tap on Backup, and then select all partitions. Then do the swipe action at bottom to start the backup process.

Happy flashing!
