Samsung kills Samsung Music, Google Play Music to be the default music app on Samsung devices

If you despise the presence of two pre-installed music apps on your Samsung device, there is good news for you (or maybe bad news, if you are a fan of Samsung Music). Google recently announced in a blog post that they have teamed up with Samsung and as a result of the partnership between them, Samsung Music is officially no more. Meaning, there will be no Samsung Music on the new Samsung devices, instead, Samsung will use Google Play Music as its default music player.

Although, we have already seen the Google Play Music being the default player on Galaxy S7 but now the trend is going to continue for all devices starting with Galaxy S8 and S8+.

Google Play Music is not limited to just being a music player but also is a music streaming service like Spotify and moreover, provides cloud service to store your own music. To compete with Apple Music and Spotify, the partnership between the two makes complete sense, since Samsung is the world’s largest Android smartphone maker.

So what’s in it for a Samsung user?

For the starters, Samsung users can upload 100,000 tracks to the Google Play Music. In case you didn’t know, on the other devices Google allows users to upload only 50,000 tracks, so basically the count has doubled for Samsung users.

Not only that, to get more customers on board for the premium service, Google Play Music will offer a free three-month trial to the Samsung users, instead of a just one-month free trial.

And of course, what’s the fun of the partnership if it’s not integrated with Bixby? So, yes, the Google Play Music will work with Samsung’s new intelligent service. Users can ask Bixby to play music and it’ll start playing on the Google Play Music instantly.

  1. Glad Samsung finally accepted their defeat, I definitely prefer Google Play music. It’s crazy how many app ideas Samsung copied from google (shown in the link below).

    1. Well not all of them XD some of them are basic android applications 😛

    2. And it’s also crazy how some of the major features in recent Android releases were taken off Samsung’s book: Split screen in Nougat, Quick panel toggles in notification shade and some more.

  2. samsung should be more careful about the sound quality of their music!! the sound quality of their phones are horrible !!! mid range phones like oneplus, and ZTE has much better sound quality on their phones….

  3. Nice to see them both integrated into one and moreover offering the Samsung customers more bandwidth and the three month free trial was a generous offer too !

  4. It’s a smart move for Samsung, it’ll definitely allow user experience to be more enjoyable

  15. Okay, wrong headline. They didnt kill samsung music, its still included in it. And lots of people think the 100,000 is the no of songs available I think,Its actually the no of songs we can upload. 3 months of free subscription is great though. Thinking of subscribing myself. Didnt yet cause I am pretty much invested in Wynk for now.

    1. Off topic but just sharing my tip here, Wynk, Saavn and all indian free music streaming apps are free for only one reason now. To gain users and market share. Now that I have over a 100 playlists in saavn, I cant quit using it and shift to another app easily.
So whether I like it or not, I am going to be using Saavn for a long time. Soon enough these apps will slowly start demanding payment. It will be cheap at first but it will pick up eventually and we will be forced to pay. I am pretty sure you know all this. I just shared this here in case someone might benefit from it

  17. I normally listen to my music through Google Play anyway, so this does not really affect me in the slightest.

  19. Given the long history of Samsung to include redundant apps in its phones that do exactly what apps from google do(S-health, calendar, etc) , this is a positive change.
