Delhi and Pune Citizens can now check the air-quality using “SAFAR-Air” app

Citizens of New Delhi and Pune can now check the quality of air in their cities through an Android app dubbed as SAFAR Air.

The Union Ministry of earth sciences has launched the country’s first mobile app — SAFAR-Air, specifically designed to check air-quality in the city on real-time basis and provide forecast for up to three days. The SAFAR-Air app is currently available on smartphones running Google’s Android operating system and later will be available on devices running Apple’s iOS.  The application is available for a free download from Google Play store.

The System of Air Quality Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR) was originally started in Delhi in 2010 during the Commonwealth Games. The air quality index includes five colour-coded system indicating — good, moderate, poor, very poor and severe. This helps people to plan their outdoor trips more safely. App users can also share the data in their locality on Twitter, Facebook or via emails.

In 2014, Delhi was listed by the World Health Organization as the world’s most polluted city. The mobile application will be made available to Mumbai by April or May and later will be made available to Chennai and Kolkata. Air-quality advisories will be available for five regions- north, south, east, west and central Delhi.
