How to Root Sprint Galaxy Note 4 on N910PVPU2BOE1 Update

Sprint recently rolled out an OTA update with Factory Reset Protection and some bug fixes to the Galaxy Note 4, build number being N910PVPU2BOE1.

Factory Reset Protection is essentially a security feature that locks the bootloader on your phone so that nobody could factory reset your phone without your authorization. It’s a simple toggle under the Developer options titled as “Enable OEM unlock”.

Google introduced Factory Reset Protection with Android 5.0 Lollipop, and also implemented it to Nexus 6 and Nexus 9. But it’s only upto OEM and carrier partners to decide if they want to put this on their devices too. So far, only Sprint is actively pushing out updates to its Samsung devices with FPR.

With Factory Reset Protection enabled on your Galaxy Note 4, you won’t be able to flash custom binaries to your device like a custom recovery or CF Auto Root. But thankfully, FPR isn’t a complete lockdown. It can be disabled from the settings and then you can go do your normal business with Odin and all things root, recovery and custom ROMs.

After taking the N910PVPU2BOE1 OTA update on your Sprint Note 4, root access on your device must have been lost. This is normal and often happens when you install OTA updates.

Anyway, good news is you can root N910PVPU2BOE1 update with the CF Auto Root by Chainfire. Although, the CFAR hasn’t updated yet particularly for the OE1 update but users are reporting it to be already compatible with the latest firmware.

  2. Boot your Galaxy Note 4 into Download mode:
    1. Switch off your phone.
    2. Press and hold “Home + Power + Volume down” buttons for a few seconds until you see a warning screen.
    3. Press Volume Up on the warning screen to accept it and boot into Download mode.
  3. Once your Note 4 is in download mode, connect it to the PC with a USB cable. The Odin window on PC should detect the phone and show an “Added!!” message.
  4. Now click on the PDA tab on Odin window and select the CFAR file you downloaded above.
└ Note: DON’T play with any other options on the screen. You’re only required to connect your Note 4 and select the CFAR file in PDA tab.
  5. Click the Start button on Odin and wait for it to finish the process. Once it has finished successfully, you’ll see a pass message on the Odin screen.
  6. Your phone will automatically reboot when Odin is done with its job. You can then disconnect your Note 4.
