LG says its Optimus G has much better battery life than Samsung Galaxy S3

Samsung, or at least their brokerage arm, likes to believe that LG will become the No. 3 smartphone maker in 2013 and also praises the company, but LG seems to want to take every chance it can get to prove its products are better than the products of its biggest competitor. After a detailed analysis of why Samsung‘s Super AMOLED HD displays are inferior to LG’s True HD IPS displays back in April, LG has now gone ahead and demonstrated how the Optimus G has better battery life than the Samsung Galaxy S3, despite having the same 2100 mAh capacity battery.

LG conducted the tests by keeping both smartphones at 50% brightness, connected to LG’s U+ network, and with their batteries fully charged. The Optimus G was able to manage 15.8 hours of talk time vs. 9.5 hours on the Galaxy S3, which is okay since Samsung already rates the talk time of the device at only 11.5 hours compared to LG’s official rating of 15 hours. When it came to video recording and playback, the Optimus G managed a score of 3.8 and 7.9 hours, respectively, compared to the Galaxy S3 which scored 2.8 hours of recording and 7.3 hours of video playback.

LG also demonstrated the power consumption of the two devices using a 1.8GB game, and the Optimus G was found to consume less power than the Galaxy S3, and considering that the former uses an LCD display, which always draws less power than an AMOLED unit, as well as a processor that is built on a more efficient 28nm process and newer architecture compared to the Galaxy S3’s 32nm Exynos processor, the results aren’t too surprising.

The Optimus G is a clear winner, despite having to take care of a chipset that is more powerful than the Galaxy S3’s Exynos, but don’t take this as a sign of the Galaxy S3’s battery life being poor, as it sports a power-hungry Super AMOLED display (with black levels unmatched by LG’s LCD display) and is also running on a less efficient processor, yet manages to give great battery life.

Whether you go with an LG Optimus G or a Samsung Galaxy S3, rest assured that you are using one of the best Android smartphones currently available. Actually, some Galaxy S3 are already running Android 4.1 while the Optimus G will get Android 4.1 in December, and many will argue that the newest OS version is more important in the world of Android, so it is quite hard to choose the better device of the two at this point.
