One Click Root and ClockworkMod (CWM) Recovery for Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 on Leaked Android 4.1 Firmware

The Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 recently saw the official Android 4.1 Jelly Bean firmware leak for it, and for those who tried it out can now root the Android 4.1 firmware and install ClockworkMod (CWM) recovery on it, thanks to a one-click root and CWM package released by XDA Senior Member ketut.kumajaya.

Rooting allows many different functions like accessing system files, overclocking (along with the use of a custom kernel), while ClockworkMod recovery can be used to install custom ROMs, factory reset the device, backup and restore ROMs, etc, so quite a few people will be looking a way to root and install CWM on the leaked Android 4.1 firmware, and this guide will help them do just that.

So, let’s take a look at how you can root and install CWM recovery on the official leaked Android 4.1 firmware on the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0.

Compatibility

This hack and the guide below are compatible only and only with Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0, model number P3100. It’s not compatible with any other device. Check your device’s model number in: Settings » About tablet.

Warning!

The methods and procedures discussed here are considered risky and you should not attempt anything if you don’t know completely what it is. If any damage occurs to your device, we won’t be held liable.

How To Root and Install CWM Recovery on Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 P3100

  1. [Important] Make sure you have the leaked Android 4.1 Jelly Bean firmware installed on your tablet. You can install it using the guide → here.
  2. Just to be safe, backup your apps and important data — bookmarks, contacts, SMS, APNs (internet settings), etc. This Android backup guide would help you.
  3. It’s important you’ve the proper drivers for the tablet installed. If you have installed Samsung’s Kies software, and have connected your tablet atleast once with Kies, you already have the drivers. If not, then download and install Kies and connect your device at least once then disconnect and reboot your device and PC.
    Download Kies
  4. Download the root/CWM package.
    Download Link  |  Filename: CWM_ROOT_P3100.tar.md5.zip | Size: 6.59 MB
  5. Extract the downloaded zip file once to get a file named CWM_ROOT_P3100.tar.md5 (you might see the file name end with .tar instead of .md5 as the file extension is usually hidden, so it’s normal).
  6. Download Odin, which will be used to flash the firmware on your tablet.
    Download Odin3 v3.04   |  Filename: Odin3_v3.04.zip
  7. Extract the contents of the Odin3_v3.04.zip file to a folder on your computer.
  8. Disconnect your Tablet if it’s connected to PC, then switch it off.
  9. Now, put the Galaxy Tablet 2 7.0 in Download Mode — press and hold these keys together: Volume Up + Power (the volume up key is the volume key on the right).
Warning! screen will come up; press Volume Up key to continue to enter Download Mode.
  10. Open Odin by double-clicking on the Odin3 v3.04.exe file obtained in step 6 after extracting Odin3_v3.04.zip.
  11. Connect your tablet to PC now. You should get the message “Added!” under Odin’s message box in the bottom left.
    • Note: If you don’t get the Added! message, then probably there is a problem with drivers. Make sure you’ve proper drivers installed (check step 2). Also, uninstall Kies from the Control Panel as well (this will leave the drivers on the computer but remove Kies which can interfere with the procedure).
  12. In ODIN, Click on PDA and select the CWM_ROOT_P3100.tar.md5 file (from step 4).
  13. Important! Do not make any other changes in Odin except selecting the required files as given in step 11. Leave all other options as they are. Make sure Re-partition option is not selected and is unchecked.
  14. Now, hit the START button to start flashing the root/CWM package. When the flashing is complete, your tablet will automatically reboot — and when you see the Samsung logo, you can safely unplug the cable. Plus, you’ll get a PASS (with green background) message in the left-most box at the very top of the Odin.
    • What to do if Odin gets stuck: If ODIN gets stuck and doesn’t seem to be doing anything, or you get a FAIL message (with red background) in ODIN, disconnect the tablet from the PC, close ODIN, then press and hold Volume Up + Power keys till the device reboots and shows the Warning! screen. Here, press Volume Up key to continue to enter Download Mode, then repeat the procedure again from Step 9.
  15. After the tablet boots up, you will have root access as well as ClockworkMod recovery installed. To try out ClockworkMod recovery, turn off the tablet. Then, hold down Volume Down + Power buttons (the volume down button is the volume key on the left i.e the one next to the power button) together, then when the screen turns on, let go of power button but keep holding the Volume down button for a few more seconds to boot into recovery. In recovery, you can use the volume buttons to navigate and the power button to select items.

Your Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 is now rooted and has ClockworkMod recovery installed as well. Do let us know how it works!
