VERIZON SAMSUNG GALAXY S3 KITKAT UPDATE INSTALLATION

Before you begin with guide instructions below, make sure your android device is adequately charged — at least 50% battery of the device.

STEP 0: CHECK DEVICE MODEL NO.

To make sure your device is eligible with this, you must first confirm its model no. in ‘About device’ option under Settings. Another way to confirm model no. is by looking for it on the packaging box of your device. It must be SCH-I535!

Please know that this page is meant only for Verizon Samsung Galaxy S3. Please DO NOT try the procedures given here on other variants of the Galaxy S3 (including the S3 devices at At&T, US Cellular, T-Mobile and International Ones) or on any other device of Samsung or any other company. You have been Warned!

  STEP 1: BACKUP YOUR DEVICE

Back up important data and stuff before you start playing around here as there are chances you might lose your apps and app-data (app settings, game progress, etc.), and in rare case, files on the internal memory, too.

For help on Backup and Restore, check out our exclusive page on that linked right below.

► ANDROID BACK UP AND RESTORE GUIDE: APPS AND TIPS

STEP 2: INSTALL THE LATEST CWM/TWRP RECOVERY

Skip this step if you already have latest version of CWM or TWRP recovery installed on your device.

Make sure that you’ve latest version of the recovery installed on your device.

Older versions of CWM and TWRP recoveries are not working with Android 4.4 based ROMs, throwing installation errors and WiFi bugs, therefore you need to use the latest version of either recovery.

For help on installing recovery on your Verizon Galaxy S3, check our exclusive pages on TWRP and CWM recoveries for Verizon Galaxy S3.

Be sure to transfer the ROM and Gapps files you downloaded above to your phone and remember the location of the files. You will need to flash them now on your device using either of ClockworkMod (CWM) or TWRP recovery.

Example video: If you haven’t used CWM recovery before to install a .zip file of a ROM or anything else, then we suggest you first watch a video of that to get familiar with the process. Click here to watch the video

  1. Boot into recovery mode. If you’re rooted, the easiest way to boot into recovery mode would be using the QuickBoot app. If not rooted, then follow the instructions below:
    • Power off your device and wait for 5-10 seconds until the device is fully switched off.
    • Press and hold  Volume Up + Home + Power buttons together and release them as soon as you see the Galaxy S3 logo.
└ In Recovery mode, use Volume buttons to navigate Up and Down between options and use Power button to select an option.
  2. Create a Nandroid Backup from recovery. It’s optional but very important to do, so that in case something goes wrong you can restore to current status easily. For making a Nandroid Backup, go to Backup And Restore » Backup.
  3. Perform a full clean-up of the device (This will delete all apps and their settings and game progress). For this:
    • Select Wipe data/Factory reset, then select Yes on the next screen to confirm factory reset (screenshot).
    • Select Wipe Cache Partition, then select Yes on the next screen to confirm wiping cache.
  4. First Install the ROM file:
    • Select Install zip » Choose zip from sdcard (or external sdcard, you know where your files are) » browse to the location where you saved the file and select the ROM file. How to Flash File in CWM Recovery
  5. Now similarly flash the Gapps file.
└ Make sure to first flash the ROM file and then the Gapps file.
  6. Reboot your device. For this, go back to the main menu of recovery and select reboot system now.

That’s all. Your phone will now reboot and it will take some time as it’ll be phone’s first boot after installing Android 4.4, be extremely excited for this!

Note: In case your device gets bootloop (stuck at logo while rebooting), just do a factory reset (step 3) and you will be fine.

  1. I get a error message every time I try and install the ROM file. First of all on my version of the Recover mode does NOT have a Install from ZIP. Only: Install form External I get an error message: Fail: Ignature could not be verified. Then it reboot automatically. Back to version 4.3.

    1. That’s default recovery you are using which cannot flash ROMs. You need to unlock it first, flash a safetrap recovery (which would get you TWRP recovery) and then have to use TWRP to flash ROMs.

    2. Does that not require me to root the phone? The safetrap I installed said it is not rooted and gave not ability….

    3. Using Odin I get an error every time I try to load a file… So I can not even root the phone either. I get a FAIL! (Auth) error.

    4. Update: Ok, I gave in and figured out how to Root the Samsung S3 SCH-i535 with SafeRoot

Then I installed Safestrap 3.71 and twrp 2.6.3.1-d2vzw and Safe
      Now…

When I get to the SafeStrap menu: First I tried to overwrite the Stock Ron, but because I lost my phone for a while, I redid it under Slot-1.
      So now….

Every time it reboots I get a screen that says Custom.. I assume this is normal?
Then when I do all the steps described.. I get the following:

When I get the Safestrap icon:
If booting from the Stock-Rom: Its says Disabled
If booting from Rom-Slot-1: It says Active
Is this a problem when using Stock-Rom??

      Ok, using Slot-1 now…

      I install in the ROM:
      aokp_d2vzw0kitkat_nightly_2014-03-10.zip
      aokp-full_gapps-kk-20140211.zip

So when I boot now, it boots fine, I see the Samsung SIII and then the screen goes black forever. I have to remove the battery and go back to the Safestack screen and go back to the Stock Rom for my 4.3 version of Android.

      HELP….

Question is this because of the versions of the software I installed…. On the site is said to install a specific version of gapps…. But that version was no longer available. The list on the site where you shows the gapps had many, but none that looked similar. So I went and got the current version of gapps….

Also I read there are incompatibility issues with Safestrap and twrp… They seem to work fine on my phone, but who knows..

    5. Just a FYI, I have tried the 3-22 GApps_Standard_4.4.2_signed.zip from goo.im site. Same failure continues sending my phone into a black hole.
