Install CWM Recovery and Root Samsung Galaxy Player 5.0, Both USA and International Versions

Looking to install ClockworkMod (CWM) recovery so that you can install custom ROMs, and/or root your Galaxy Player 5.0? This guide will help you do just that, for both the US and international variants (but not the Korean variant), through step-by-step instructions.

This method is specially useful for those who updated to the official Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread firmware and lost root and CWM recovery as Samsung patched and disabled the previous methods available to root and install CWM recovery.

Let’s take a look at how the Galaxy Player 5.0 can be rooted and install ClockworkMod recovery on it.

Compatibility

This ROM and the guide below are compatible only and only with the international/US Galaxy Player 5.0. It’s not compatible with any other device. Check your device’s model number in: Settings » About phone.

Warning!

The methods and procedures discussed here are considered risky and you should not attempt anything if you don’t completely know what it is. If any damage occurs to your device, we won’t be held liable.

How to Root and Install ClockworkMod Recovery on Galaxy Player 5.0

  1. Download and install the software Kies on your computer, which will install the necessary drivers for the phone. Skip this step if you already have Kies installed.
    Download Kies
  2. Download the CWM recovery image, according to your variant of the device (international or US):
  3. Download the Superoneclick tool, which will be used to root the device.
    Download Superoneclick  |  Filename: Suproneclick.zip
  4. Extract the Suproneclick.zip file to get a folder called Suproneclick.
  5. Download Odin, which will be used to flash the CWM recovery on your device.
    Download Link  |  Filename: Odin3 v1.7.exe
  6. Open Odin — right-click on the Odin3 v1.7.exe file that you downloaded in step 5, then select Run as administrator (if you don’t get the option to run as administrator, simply select Open).
  7. Turn off the device. Then, boot into Download mode. To do so, connect the USB cable to the computer, but not to the device. Then, while holding the Volume Down key, insert the USB cable to the device. Remember, you have to hold the volume down key while plugging in the USB cable to the device.
  8. Odin will now say Added!! in the message on the bottom left. If it does not, make sure Kies is installed so that the drivers are installed as well. Also try connecting to another USB port on the computer, preferably a USB port on the back if you are using a desktop computer.
  9. Now, click the PDA tab in Odin, then select the YP-G70-Kernel-r14.tar or DD_01142012.tar file (according to your variant of the device of course) that you downloaded in step 2. Do not make any other changes in Odin and make sure the Re-Partition option is not selected.
  10. Then, click on Start to start installing ClockworkMod recovery on your Galaxy Player 5.0. After the flash is completed, you will get a PASS message in Odin and the device will reboot. Once it’s rebooted, you can disconnect the device from the computer.
What to do if Odin gets stuck: If Odin gets stuck at any point in the flashing procedure, either at the beginning or in the middle, or if the procedure fails with a FAIL message, disconnect the device from the PC, close ODIN, remove battery, re-insert it, then repeat the procedure from step 6.
  11. CWM recovery is now installed on your device, and can be booted into by turning off the device, then turning on the phone while pressing down the Volume up button.
  12. Now, we need to root the device. After the phone boots up, go into Settings » Applications » Development and enable USB debugging.
  13. Then, go into the Suproneclick folder that you obtained in step 4, and right-click on the file named Superoneclick and select Run as administrator (if you don’t get the option to run as administrator, simply select Open).
  14. Click on the Root button to start rooting your Galaxy Player 5.0, and just wait for the procedure to finish. Your phone might reboot during and after the procedure, which is normal.
  15. Once rooting is done, disconnect your device from the computer.

Your Galaxy Player 5.0 is now rooted and also has ClockworkMod recovery installed on it so that you can use apps that need root access as well as install custom ROMs on it. Have fun!

  1. My player is still stuck on FroYo, and Kies states that this is the latest Firmware. Where can I find Gingerbread v2.3.6 (International)?
Can anyone help please? I’ve used Odin before, so I can flash it myself, I just need the Rom.

  5. USA version has soft touch buttons on it ( home back and menu – so you need to use the KERNEL DD_01142012 and that installs v 5.x of CWM (clockwork mod) on your device works perfect for USA VERSION only. After you successfully use ODIN to do the install you will see a GREEN BOX saying PASS … once it is all done, restart your device and hit POWER and VOLUME UP to see the new wonderful menu with tons of features … and if you want to do more advanced stuff with your laptop connected.. use POWER and VOLUME DOWN for the downloading menu

I have never seen the international version but I believe it has a HARD push button at the bottom .. then you need to use the Kernel 14 file instead …. do remember use the RIGHT KERNEL file for the USA MODEL … or your 3 soft touch buttons will not function at the bottom of the galaxy media player 5.0.

I cant find any “makes sense and easy to follow with the correct files downloadable” to upgrade my ROM f to kitkat.
