Unlike Google, Samsung doesn’t publish the official Android OS software support period for its devices, but it publishes an official list of devices that will receive regular security updates, either on a monthly or quarterly basis. As of this writing, Samsung has made some updates to this list that adds and removes a number of popular phones from the list of supported devices.
From today henceforth, owners of the Samsung Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge and Galaxy S6 Edge+ will no longer receive any software update. The 2015 handsets have been removed from the list of supported devices and in their place, we have the new Galaxy Note 9. As for the rest of the newer devices in the Galaxy S series, including the S7 family, monthly updates will keep coming in. The story is also true for owners of the Galaxy A5 2016, A5 2017, and Galaxy A8 2018.
All the other handsets in the Galaxy A 2018 and J 2018 series have also been added to the list of devices that receive quarterly security updates, among them Galaxy A6, A6+, A8 Star, J4, J6, J8, J2 2018, J2 Core 2018, and even the new tablets in town – the Tab S4 10.5 and Tab A 10.5.
The latter list has also seen a few handsets removed, among them the Galaxy J1 Mini Prime and Galaxy J2 2016, meaning they won’t receive any other software update from Samsung. If you own any of the affected devices led by the Galaxy Note 5 and S6 series, you might want to get another device that is guaranteed to receive regular security updates.
