Samsung has announced its brand new mobile application processor, the Exynos 7. The processor is for the next generation smartphones, however, no information was given on whether the chipset would be included for the forthcoming Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge. Samsung reported that the new processor would be about 20% faster and would use 35% less power.
A few months ago, Samsung had released the Exynos 7 Octa processor. While it was a 64 bit, ARMv8 processor based on a 20nm design, the updated Exynos’ chips will be 14nm processors. Also, Samsung said that the new technology would be used in other products in the future. This new design should offer improvements in both efficiency and performance. It is expected to put forth better performance and also have a longer battery life.
Samsung is also incorporating 3D FinFET structure on transistors which helps Exynos 7 overcome performance and scaling limitations from the planar structure used in 20nm processes. Although this is a great improvement for Samsung, it is not the first chip maker to adopt a 14nm process. We have to remember that Intel’s Broadwell chips are also based on 14nm designs. But, Intel’s processors are designed for desktops, notebooks and tablets while Samsung’s chips are for mobile devices like smartphones.
