Google Pixels could get car crash mode with Android Q update

Pixel 3a reset

Google could be working on a potentially Pixel-exclusive feature dubbed car crash detection mode. This is according to a discovery made by XDA Developers after a deeper dive into the latest Android Q beta 3.

Apparently, strings referencing to what could potentially be a life-saving feature have been found. The feature is said to “automatically launch an alert activity when the device detects you are in a car crash.”

The folks at XDA also found that this feature will probably be attached to the Safety Hub app, which is where the said references were found.

While this feature seems cool and all, it’s still unclear how this will work, with questions of how your Google Pixel will determine that you are in a car crash still lingering. It’s possible that things like GPS, sensors and maybe even the camera and microphone could play a part in all this.

Even more interesting is that car crash mode would have to be tested before being fully implemented. So, how again will Google test the feature? It should be an interesting future to see if this feature materializes, but for now, we’ll have to wait.
