How to Fix T-Mobile Galaxy S6 Capacitive Buttons Always-on setting to Auto-off

Although capacitive buttons are going away in favor of on-screen buttons from almost all Flagship devices from major manufacturers, Samsung is still keeping them as they fit good in their design philosophy of keeping a physical home button, which they need to fit in an fingerprint sensor.

But capacitive buttons can be annoying when using in dark, specially when they have this always-on behavior like T-Mobile’s Galaxy S6 does. The international variants have a setting that turns of the capacitive button lights when a user is interacting with screen, but for some stupid reason T-Mobile chose to keep the capacitive button lights always-on.

User mrapp over at XDA was annoyed by this on his T-Mobile Galaxy S6, and so he decided to find a fix for it, and which he did. Turns out changing the value of sales code from T-Mobile’s “TMB” to some other carriers like KDO, TLS, RWC, BMC, etc. in the sales_code.dat file under /system/csc/ directory does the trick.

You can easily do that with a file manager app with root access (we recommend ES File Explorer), or if your prefer flashable zips more (like us) than mrapp has also been kind to provide a recovery flashable zip with the fix. Grab it from the download link below:

Important Note: Backup important files stored on your device before proceeding with the steps below, so that in case something goes wrong you’ll have backup of all your important files.

  1. Install TWRP Recovery on your Galaxy S6.
  2. Transfer Capacitive Button fix file to your device’s internal storage and remember the location where you save them.
  3. Boot Galaxy S6 into Recovery mode.
  4. Make a backup. Once in TWRP recovery, take a backup of your current ROM. Select Backup, then do a “Swipe to Back Up” on the bottom of the screen. Wait for the backup to finish, it’s a time consuming process.
  5. Install Capacitive Button fix now. Go back to the main menu of TWRP recovery and select Install. Navigate to the folder where you saved the fix’s zip file, select it and “Swipe to Confirm Flash” on the bottom of the screen. Now wait until the flashing process finishes.
  6. Go to back to recovery’s Main menu, select Reboot » select System.
