Android has had built-in backup system for device data and apps for a long time, however it hardly ever worked the way users wished it to. But with Android 6.0 Marshmallow Google has revamped the service and it now takes backups that work.
On Android 6.0 Marshmallow you can enable auto backup for device data (WiFi passwords, call history, etc) and app data which includes settings and files stored by apps, to your Google Drive.
When enabled, auto backup will periodically save your device and app data to a private folder in Google Drive, which won’t be counted against your Drive storage quota.
However, before you begin to trust the new auto backup service on Android Marshmallow, specially the app data backup feature, know that it wholly relies on what a developer has chosen in his app to be backupable. Plus, almost none of the apps on Play store currently support the new app data backup feature on Marshmallow. So don’t trust it yet.
Enabling Auto Backup is pretty simple, just follow the instructions below:
- Open Settings on your Android device.
- Select Backup & reset from the list.
- Select Backup up my data and turn it On.
That’s it. This will enable auto backup on your Android device.
