Sony targets selling 50 million smartphones in 2013

Sony is targeting a year on year sales growth of 50% in 2013-14 and expecting to sell 50 million smartphones, compared to 34 million Xperia shipments in the 2012-2013 financial year (a 48% growth from last year), according to a CENS.com report.

While this is quite small compared to Samsung, whose Galaxy S3 alone sold 20 million units in a period of 100 days, a 50% growth sales is still quite good for Sony, who have had a rocky ride in the Android business up until the launch of the Xperia S, and with devices like the Xperia T or the upcoming Xperia “Yuga”, which combine good design with impressive specs, the growth in sales won’t be surprising. The number of handsets outsourced is also expected to rise to 30 percent to 35 percent, moving from 15 million to 17.5 million units.

Sony would move into the third spot behind Apple and Samsung if they are able to meet their expected sales target, so here’s wishing Sony the best of luck, and let us hope that they bring us better and badder Android smartphones in the coming years, because in the end, happier customers are good for business, right?
