Sony has taken its high-end smartphone Xperia XZ Premium and its smaller variant Xperia XZs to the stage at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. These smartphones, aimed at capturing the interest of photography enthusiasts, come with the new 19 MP camera sensor which can shoot videos in super slow motion (960 fps). Not only this, there are several other interesting camera features which needs proper detailing (which we will deal in a separate para altogether below). But before that, let’s take a look at the hardware and software assortment Sony brings on board in these two devices.
The Xperia XZ Premium, as the name implies, has a premium look and feel with its 4K 5.5-inch Triluminos HDR display (2160 x 3840 pixels resolution) and a Gorilla Glass 5 on top. The phone gets the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor paired with Adreno 540 GPU. It carries a 4GB RAM/ 64GB ROM combo. Under the hood, there’s 3230mAh battery with QuickCharge 3.0 and a Android 7.0 Nougat OS. Connectivity options include USB Type-C port, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.2, GPS + GLONASS, NFC. It also carries IP 68 rating making it water and dust proof and a front fingerprint scanner embedded on the home button.
Xperia XZs
The Xperia XZs, on the other hand, carries downgraded specsheet compared to its older sibling. It sports a smaller 5.2-inch (1080×1920 pixels) Triluminos display and is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor paired with Adreno 510 GPU. It carries a 4GB RAM and comes in two storage options of 32GB and 64GB which can be further expanded upto 256GB via a microSD card. The battery gets downgraded to 2900mAh while the OS remains the same.
Motion Eye Camera
Coming to the camera on board both the Sony handsets, let’s have a look in details. The rear camera is 19MP and the selfie one is 13MP. The uniqueness of the rear camera is Sony’s new Motion Eye feature which the company claims is the ‘world’s first memory embedded camera’.
The new ‘Motion Eye’ feature works by allowing your Xperia phone click four pictures in the one second before you hit the shutter button. It is a type of predictive capture.

The Motion Eye camera is apparently based on new memory stacked 1/2.3-inch Exmor RS CMOS sensor that provides 5x faster image scanning and data transfer. With this, video recording can be done at 960 frames per second which in laymen’s term means super slow motion mode (as seen in the video below). This slow motion video is four times slower than other smartphones in the market.
