Samsung working on 8-core big.LITTLE ARM chipset?

Samsung is said to be working on their next gen chipset that will combine 8 CPU cores, which in turn will be placed into a smartphone or tablet. The 8 core processor consists of 4 ARM Cortex A15 cores (high performance) and 4 ARM Cortex A7 (high power efficiency) cores. The technology that will make them work together is ARM’s big.LITTLE chip design.

bg.LITTLE essentially enables the device to use the high performance cores when required, and seamlessly switch to the low power cores for simpler tasks as well as during idle time, thus enabling much better power handling and better battery life. For now, it would seem that the chipset cannot run 8 cores simultaneously .

Moving on the actual chipset again, as said earlier, it will pack in four A15 cores clocked at 1.8GHz and four A7 cores clocked at 1.2GHz. The four A15 high-power cores should ensure a lot of power under the hood. The recently released Nexus 10 packs in two A15 cores, and packs a wallop. Imagine what double that power means!

With a 48-core chipset already said to be in the works at Intel, we wonder what’s coming next. As for the 8-core big.LITTLE chip by Samsung, we wonder which new beast is gonna house this bad boy. Galaxy S4? Or a new tablet perhaps?
