Samsung S-GPU video chip to rival ARM’s Mali and Qualcomm’s Adreno GPU chips

Samsung’s Exynos processors are often discussed in the same circle as Qualcomm’s processors, particularly when it comes to high-end Android flagships. There have been times when Exynos SoCs were said to have better battery life than Qualcomm Snapdragon SoCs, though the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ have significantly narrowed the gap on the whole thanks to strides made by way of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835.

And yet, Samsung, in working with Qualcomm to produce the Snapdragon 820, 821, and 835 with its FinFET process, the company must still rely on ARM’s Mali GPUs (such as  for its graphics chips in Exynos SoCs. Qualcomm has its own Adreno GPU chips for its SoCs. Samsung wants to further establish itself as an independent entity that utilizes its own chips throughout its own high-end smartphones.

A leak from Weibo social media member Ice Universe suggests that Samsung is working on a GPU of its own to match its own Exynos CPU.  Samsung is working on the S-GPU now (no word on whether or not this will remain the name of the GPU or Samsung will change it), and it could appear in next year’s Exynos SoC (perhaps a part of the Exynos 9 Octa series).

Samsung wants to rely less on other companies and produce as many of its components in-house as possible. Samsung already manufactures its own CPU (Exynos), AMOLED panels, camera sensors, and has implemented its own wireless charging solution and water and dust resistance, into its Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+. A rumor from months ago says that the Korean giant could be working on its own response to Corning’s Gorilla Glass panels in the market called “Turtle Glass.”

The Exynos SoC of 2018, with Samsung’s S-GPU, will be well-established with a Samsung GPU to rival Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 on the world stage.
