Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 Specs exposed, dubbed as GT-N5100

Back in December, a new Samsung device with model number GT-N5100 appeared in benchmarks and was rumored to be a 7-inch Galaxy Note, until a Samsung official refuted the rumor saying the company had no plans to pursue a 7-inch Note. And the official may have been telling the truth, as according to Sammobile, the GT-N5100 will be sporting an 8.0-inch display and dubbed – you guessed it – the Galaxy Note 8.0!

The display will be of the Super Clear LCD type (like the Galaxy Camera), with a resolution of 1280×800 pixels. There’s no word on what chipset will be powering this tablet, but other specs have been rumored to include 2GB of RAM, 5 megapixel rear camera, 1.3 megapixel front camera, 16/32 GB internal storage along with microSD support, and Bluetooth 4.0, USB 2.0, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, and A-GPS connectivity.

As always, there will be both Wi-Fi-only (N5110) and 3G-enabled (N5100) variants. On the software side, the Galaxy Note 8.0 will reportedly run on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, naturally with Samsung’s TouchWiz UX on top. Taking care of the power needs of everything will be a 4600 mAh battery, which seems right at home as a middle ground between the 3100 mAh battery on the Galaxy Note 2 and the Galaxy Note 10.1.

And how can we forget the S Pen, without which a Galaxy Note tablet (or phone) would lose all its luster. Sammobile doesn’t mention anything about the S Pen, but knowing Samsung, they’ll probably announce a newer and improved version of the stylus, though whether that happens remains to be seen.

While an 8-inch Galaxy Note might seem like Samsung is simply continuing to milk customers on the Galaxy Note name, it is actually a good idea to launch an 8-inch tablet and place it right between the 10.1-inch Note and the 5.5-inch one. Apple launched the iPad Mini with a 7.9″ screen, so Samsung could be attempting to put a competing tablet on the market, made desirable by the S Pen stylus and innovative software features of TouchWiz.

Samsung is expected to announce the Galaxy Note 8.0 at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next month. The specs of the device don’t really seem that great, but hopefully these aren’t the final specs and Samsung will surprise us during the official unveiling.

Would you guys buy a Galaxy Note 8.0 or do you think a 7.0-inch Galaxy Note would have been a better deal?

  1. This is probably the competitor for the iPad Mini, which will give users many more options than the Apple device, such as USB connectivity and Micro-SD option to add 64Gb memory, taking the total up to 96Gb on board. Ideal for those of us who don’t live in the CBD and WiFi is poor! Take all your media with you – anywhere! This mobel will overcome the screen size objection that Apple flogged to all and sundry when comparing Nexus 7 to iPad Mini. Sammy of course always had the Tab 8.9, which also had mobile call ability, unlike the iPad Mini!
