Samsung announces 10nm process 64GB flash memory chips

Samsung announced volume production of 20nm ultra-fast eMMC memory chips this August, but not willing to sit idle, Samsung has already announced the move to a 10nm process for a new 64GB eMMC Pro Class 2000 memory chip.

The upgraded memory chip has a 20 percent smaller footprint, and also 30 percent advantages in both performance and manufacturing productivity according to Samsung. The company will be approaching JEDEC next year to create a new interface standard for the Pro Class 2000, which feature a write speed of 2,000 IOPS (input/output per second) and a read speed of 5,000 IOPS, for a bandwidth of up to 260 MB/s read and 50MB/s write speeds.

When these new chips will go into production hasn’t been announced yet, though we can expect that to happen only next year, maybe in time for use in Samsung’s next Galaxy flagship. Slow memory chips have been one of the main bottlenecks in smartphones, but hopefully by next year that won’t be the case.
