Pantech Vega R3 benchmarks tells us to take this phablet seriously

The Pantech Vegra R3, a 5.3″ Android phablet exclusively for the South Korean market, was put through the paces in some benchmark tests by eprice.com, and it seems that at least in synthetic performance scores, the Vegra R3 gives all other Android smartphones out there, including the Galaxy Note 2 and the HTC One X+, a serious run for their money.

Powered by a quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro chipset, the Vegra R3 scored 13,789 points in AnTuTu, higher than any other competing smartphone, while breaking the 7000 points barrier with 7547 points in the Quadrant test. In Vellamo’s HTML5 test, the R3 scored 1890 points, beating the likes of the HTC One X and Galaxy S3 (at least the dual-core US variants), while scoring a bit low in the Metal test compared to devices like the Intel-powered Motorola RAZR i.

However, in graphics benchmarks, the Vegra R3 wasn’t as impressive despite its powerful Adreno 320 graphics chip, scoring 57.1 FPS in NenaMark 2, which is lower than the Galaxy S3 and Note 2, both of which gain scores upwards of 59 FPS, held back only by their 60 FPS software limit. eprice.com also carried out some data speed tests, getting a download speed of 32.25 Mbps and an upload speed of 13.72 Mbps, with a network latency of 36 ms, which is expected on the high speed LTE networks in South Korea.

Other specs of the Pantech Vegra R3 include 2GB of RAM, 5.3″ HD Natural IPS Pro LCD display, 13 megapixel camera on the back, 2 megapixel camera on the front, 16GB storage and a microSD slot, 2,600 mAh battery that can be fully charged in just 100 minutes, and Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich, running Pantech’s unique custom skin. An update to Android 4.1 is in the works, and we can only expect benchmark scores to reach higher levels when the phablet gets updated to the faster and better optimized version of Android.

The Vegra 3 sports some impressive performance for sure, so it is too bad that there don’t seem to be any plans at Pantech to release the Vegra R3 outside of South Korea. While we might have powerful devices like the Galaxy Note 2 or the upcoming Nexus 4 to keep us happy, one can never have too many beastly smartphones battling it out in the market for the consumer’s hard-earned money.
