Onyx International is working on an Android phone that will feature an E Ink display, which is a plastic-based unbreakable display that remains perfectly readable even in bright sunlight. The phone promises to have a battery life of up to 1 week on a single charge.
The smartphone in question is lighter than 100g, and while it is in the prototype stage right now, ARMdevices.net was able to demo it and has uploaded a video comparing the phone’s display to the Galaxy Nexus’ Super AMOLED display. As you can see, the display remains exceptionally visible compared to the barely visible SAMOLED display of the Galaxy Nexus. The phone is supposed to be running on a ARM Cortex-A5 processor, and the display remains on at all times, displaying relevant info without sacrificing battery life thanks to its extremely low power consumption.
The caveat here is that E Ink displays can’t display color, which is why E Ink Corp., makers of the E Ink displays, are intending the display to be used on the back of smartphones, which could be useful to display info such as missed calls, SMS, and emails, and also an e-book reader when needed.
It is an intuitive proposition, so let us hope some manufacturers at least experiment with putting the E Ink display on their devices.
