A lot of people with Google’s Pixel phones in-hand, are reporting issues with Google Assistant after installing the latest Android 7.1.1 update with build NMF26O.
Apparently, the “Ok Google” hotword is no longer working when the device’s screen is off after updating the device to Android 7.1.1.
However, upon further inspection, it seems that the issue isn’t with the Android 7.1.1 update or Google Asisstant, but it is an added security feature for the Assistant to only wake up from “Ok Google” command when it’s coming from a trusted voice.
Trusted voice is a feature of Google Assistant which enables the Assistant to recognize the owner’s voice via a voice training module built within the app. The feature has been available for long, even in the previous iteration of Asisstant — Google Now — but Google seems to have forced this security feature on the Android 7.1.1 update.
To get “Ok Google” working again (from screen-off) for your Google Assistant, just do the following:
- Open Google app.
- Tap the Hamburger menu to bring-in options from the left side of screen, and then select Settings from there.
- Select Voice » “Ok Google” Detection.
- Now enable the toggle for Trusted Voice.
└ If you get a prompt to train the Assistant with your voice, do it.

Ive had this issue since i bought the phone. They sent me a new one already and the issue is still there. I did this fix on both phones. The issue is this crap phone. Google phone cant do “ok google”….. Crazyyy im sueing.
