Nexus S (i9020 and i9023) get Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich Update – All Thanks to HAKA for the Custom ROM

So, it’s the Nexus S who gets the first running-col and good for daily-use custom ROM made on Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich. You should say thanks to HAKA, who’s definitely a lot cooler today than he was yesterday, now that he has made this custom ROM, and do check and hit some sponsors at his blogspot site — should make him a very happy and prosperous Diwali, ha!

Anyway, the custom ROM, simply called the ICS Port, is one zip file, to be flashed from recovery, which will get you the goodness of the latest and greatest Android OS – Ice Cream Sandwich.

It’s still a work-in-progress, but you can download and use it daily pretty fairly. Here’s what’s not working right now:

  • Bluetooth
  • NFC
  • GPS
  • Panorama Mode
  • Camera will FC for the 1st time

We know you’re getting desperate to try this out. So, here are the instruction to update your Nexus S to Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich.

  1. Make sure you’ve ClockWorkMod recovery installed.
  2. Download the custom ROM from here (updated 27/10/11). However, we recommend you to try the latest available version of the ICS Port here.
  3. Transfer the downloaded ROM to sdcard to install it from recovery.
  4. Switch Off. boot to CWM recovery and flash the ICS Port Android 4.0 custom ROM using the Install from sdcard option.
  5. After flashing is done, reboot and enjoy the latest and greatest OS, Ice Cream Sandwich, right on your Nexus S.

Let us know your views on the custom ROMs in the comments below. For more updates, and to see what other users have to say on this, visit the development page here.

  1. Only for rooted devices?

    1. Clockworkmod (CWM) recovery is required too. And if you’ve that, you’re probably rooted too!

    1. To root, follow either of the rooting guides mentioned on this page — http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1067813. And then download “ROM Manager” free app from android market and install/flash clockworkmod recovery from that.

Just FYI, rooting voids the warranty of your phone. And if anything happens to your phone, we won’t be liable for anything.

  2. Ok.Thanks!
Also , wouldn’t rooting effect re-saleability of my device?

    1. Well, you can install a firmware back, which will make your phone as it was when you bought.

Get details about your current firmware (version, number, etc) in settings – about phone. Write down everything there to your gmail draft or somewhere. After you’ve had fun and want to revert back to original Nexus S firmware, search for that firmware on Internet and install it. It’s easy, I do a lot of that on my Galaxy S and S2 phones, in fact on every phone I’ve had so far.

So, resalable value won’t suffer. But follow the guides to root your phone very very very carefully. If you err on that, your device may get damaged (chances are remote, btw) and this would indeed affect re-salable value, if your device isn’t powering ON.

I hope that clears everything 🙂

  3. Awesome…Will do that and get back to you!
    Appreciated! 🙂

    1. Cool 🙂

    2. Hey, you got it working?
