Google just posted the Factory image for Nexus 9 on the factory images for Nexus devices page. Nexus 9 goes by the codename “volantis” and the first factory image for the device posted is Android 5.0 LRX21L.
Interestingly, the size of the Nexus 9 factory image is significantly larger than any Nexus device so far. It’s 805 MB. We’ve have never had any factory image for Nexus devices to be larger than 450 MB, I could be wrong for a few Mega Bytes but that has been the size of most factory images for Nexus 5.
It’s clearly the Android 5.0 lollipop that’s adding up the size of the firmware to almost double of what we have had so far. And while it isn’t a issue for the Nexus 9 or any other Nexus device with 16GB storage, it’s particularly a bad news for the Nexus 4 8GB devices with its poor storage capacity.
Let’s see what follows with the Android 5.0 update for Nexus 5, Nexus 7 and Nexus 4. We hope Google would release the factory images for these devices soon enough now.
