Nexus 7 2013 Bootloader Unlocking Guide

Nexus 7 Bootloader Unlock

Rooting, custom recoveries, custom ROMs, mods and all things fun.. it all starts with unlocking the bootloader on your Nexus device. And Google has made the bootloder unlocking process as simple as possible. It’s just a one line command and takes less than a minute to unlock the bootloader.

By unlocking the bootloader on Nexus 7 you’d be able to install root and custom recoveries on your device. And most important of all ─ Custom ROMs. There’s a great community of developers making custom ROMs for various Android devices and the Nexus 7 being a Nexus device means you’ll have handful of great custom ROMs to flash, try and have fun with.

The process of unlocking the bootloader is similar between all Nexus devices so this guide is not limited to Nexus 7 2013 only, you could use it for all Nexus devices.

WARNING!

Warranty may be void of your device if you follow the procedures given on this page!

You only are responsible for your device. We won’t be liable if any damage occurs to your device and/or its components.

BEFORE YOU BEGIN..

You must do this pre-installation stuff before attempting to unlock bootloader on your Nexus 7 2013 in order to avoid any complications later, and have a smooth and successful process.

BACK UP YOUR DEVICE

Back up important data and stuff before you start as unlocking the bootloader on your Nexus 7 would wipe/delete every single file stored on your Nexus 7. You’ll lose all your apps and app-data (app settings, game progress, etc.), and all the files stored on the internal storage of the device.

  1. Hello, Could I please ask for a little help? My Nexus 7 2012 is stuck in a boot loop after a battery drain. I can not get to the OS to enable dev’ mode to allow debugging, and I’m trying to unlock the boot loader. I’v tried a few things but can not unlock the boot loader, thank you!

    1. You don’t need to enable ADB to unlock bootloader. It’s done via Fastboot. Follow the Manual unlock method discussed on this page, it’ll work.

    2. Hi Shivam, thanks for your quick reply, I have followed these instructions, I get “Unlocking now……” top left of the screen, I left that for an hour, rebooted, however “LOCK STATE – LOCKED” I’ve tried this a few times with the same outcome. Any ideas?

    3. Hi Shivam, thanks for your quick reply, I have followed these instructions, I get “Unlocking now……” top left of the screen, I left that for an hour, rebooted, however “LOCK STATE – LOCKED”

    4. Is it showing “FAILED (remote: (Unknown error code))” error on the command prompt screen on your PC? If yes, then you’re gonna have to take this matter to Asus/Google.

You ran into boot loop after you let your battery run dry and now the bootloader isn’t unlocking. This has happened to some other users as well, check this post → http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2285638&page=2 ..and this → http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=48607538&postcount=26
Chances are slim that you still have it under warranty, hope Asus guys co-operate with you.
